Americans love an Aristocracy. Since we don't have folks of noble/titled birth of or our own we create a nobility thru other means.

Probably has something to do with the dilution of our pioneer heritage, the urbanization of the populace as a whole and the wussification of men.

What gets me is that somewhere out there, there are still folks who think that Quayle would be a viable presidential candidate...
