 :'(

A very big hole has been opened in my life.   Rush has been entertaining and informing me for nearly 30 years.   Oddly,  I found him through his old tv show.  I told a friend about it,  he told me about the radio show.  The tv show went off the air but the radio show continued.   He had been off starting two weeks ago, was off all last week..... I had feared his condition was worse than had been publicized.

R.I.P.    His excellance,  on loan from God .... paid back in full & with interest..... :'(

What did he have on Hillary?

I'm not sure when I first encountered him, Early '90s, I'm thinking I would see him on an early morning show when I was still in the Navy so had to be '92 or there about.
Sad day for freedom of speech. He leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.
Any crowing about it that I see will not be taken lightly.

R.I.P.

He had a lot to do with making me realize I did lean conservative and shouldn't trust the media and govt.  The first stuff I remember was him poking holes in environmentalist stories like saving the rainforests and other stuff.

Wise move since it appears they broke the dial off turning it so hard somewhere where 12 or 13 should be. Twitchy has some up if you dare.

CNBC referred to him as the "incendiary radio host."

MSNBC was FAR more restrained than I though they would be... "Rush Limbaugh, 'powerful and controversial' conservative radio host, dies at age 70"

Started listening to him back in the late 80's when I heard him on a co-worker's radio. He could be a pompous ass sometimes but he certainly knew how to be a thorn in Liberars' side. He will certainly be missed.

RIP

RIP, and my condolences to his family.

I didn't listen to his radio show very often, but when I did I always wondered (not really) why he was usually right about whatever issue he was talking on but he always stated it in a way guaranteed to piss off as many people as possible. =)

Rush was one of the most intelligent and articulate - not to mention entertaining - personalities on the air. I remember his TV show as well as occasional appearances on lefty TV shows like Donohue - he acquitted himself so well that "they" eventually took to putting 3 or 4 lefties on, just to try and balance him.

I don't remember it ever working.

I wish I'd had a chance to meet Rush - his dad and mine probably knew one another since both served in the 3rd Air Commando group during WWII.

RIP Rush. You were truly unique and will be missed.

Started listening to Rush in '92 for entertainment  - anything to get me out of the funk I was in from going through my second divorce, getting laid off and running out of unemployment and savings. Man, what a boost I got! The man exudes inspiration, fortitude, and a get-off-your-ass-and-get-to-work attitude!

I took my last unemployment check, bought a Makita drill and some other miscellaneous tools and went to work installing drapes and blinds helping out a swamped-with-work friend. Within 2 years I had my own work room with seven employees making drapes and building custom furniture. Met and married my third wife of 23 years as well.

I now hold a manufacturer's FFL doing custom work on firearms in my "retirement".

Not to diminish anything my parents did to raise me, and though Rush never had any children of his own, he certainly helped "bring up" a lot of us. All while suffering addiction, going deaf, and enduring cancer.

I envy the Man Card he holds.

I first listened to him while commuting to junior college somewhere around '90 to '92.  Not sure exactly when.  I grew up in the 80's.  My parents were never political and I never paid attention to media much.  I just knew the news was generally negative and didn't care for Reagan much.  Rush was the first "conservative" I ever listened to who made sense and seemed to apply basic critical thinking to issues of the day poking holes in a lot of popular topics.

I don't know how many really think about it.  There was no political talk radio before Rush (that I ever heard).  I think a lot of radio felt they had to follow the "Fairness Doctrine" which required them to be balanced.  That was removed under Reagan, but little had changed.  In the first years, Rush's show was always followed by a liberal guy trying to give the other side.  IMO, I never heard one that did a good job of it.  By the end of the 90's there were all sorts of other conservatives on the radio, some good, some not so good.  There were still liberals also.  Whatever your political leanings, you could find someone you liked.

I'll add to the memoirs.

I was born in '76, so Rush's show came out right about the time I first began to be aware of politics. The Bush I era. My grandmother would always give us the endless supply of Guidepost and Readers' Digest magazines she received, and RD reprinted a profile of him from some other magazine. I don't know what year it would have been, but I was intrigued by what I read.

From that point on, I listened to him whenever I could - in the summer, or when driving or working by myself. My Dad is very conservative, and a huge radio listener, but he never liked Limbaugh that much. I'm not sure if it was just a dislike for his style, or if it was because my Dad has a non-conformist streak that made him shy away from whatever all the other conservatives were raving about. But Dad should probably be glad Rush straightened my head out.

Years ago, the appeal of Rush's show began to wane for me. Not that I disliked Rush or disagreed with him, but at some point in the Obama years, I just took my ears elsewhere. Then I started listening more to podcasts.

We could really use a guy like him in the coming years. What a tragedy.

This.

Same experience for me.  Always liked Rush,  but around 2010 or so there were more options that didn't involve me needing to be in range of WTAM 1100 and didn't have an obscene amount of commercial breaks.

I was always pissed when baseball started back up in the spring and preempted Limbaugh on the radio.  those were the good old days, it seems.

Yeah. KMOX was really obnoxious about that. You'd be listening, and then you'd realize the commercial break that started 10 minutes ago had turned into pre-game show without any apology or announcement. But, hey, it's the St. Louis market. You should know the Cardinals' schedule by heart, and how dare you think about anything but baseball?!

There was a period of blessed happiness when AM 550 was carrying the games, though.

Well, it does help to ID the arseholes.

My grandmother told me something, well a lot of things, when I was a kid.  I will admit to not following her advice many times.  I wish I had.  Here are a couple that I have violated many times.  1.  "If you don't have something nice to say about someone, don't say anything."  2. Always tell the truth.  That way you don't have to remember the story."

Those are very good ideas to live by.

I would also add the golden rule about treating others as you would have them treat you (even people you might hate).

Like many things, they are simple admonitions and good advice...but not easy to abide by.

Hate to say it guys, but Rush and Trump are just avatars. Avatars who get the focus of hate that is in reality felt for you (us).

Somehow I don't think Rush would mind the reminder that the hatred for him is in part due to his being on the right, giving voice and speaking for the middle class conservative/right.

We shouldn't dwell on the hatred of course. But never forget, they hate you.

Rush wasn't even very right wing and they hated him with white hot hatred.

Like Trump he would have probably been considered a liberal Democrat if the climate were like the late 50's early 60's.

That an individual with mildly conservative opinions who really was pretty moderate is held up as a lion of conservativism tells you how far we have fallen.

Nonetheless, he was an entertaining voice for decades who made it OK to mock the lefts lunacy. Laughing at the leftists is a good start at breaking their spell.

Discussing the left's hate for rush in Rush's obituary and eulogy thread does the left's psychological warfare work for them.  Never changing the damn subject to something other than hate is psychologically unhealthy!  Just seeing that crap, not even engaging with it in the thread, is actually harmful to the minds and emotional states of the people here.

Not every microaggression rises to the level of psychological warfare and something tells me that Rush wouldn't have wanted his obit thread turned into a "safe space."

I was never a regular listener, but some of my family were (an uncle, in particular, and my parents from time to time).  The guy who did our premarital counseling actually went to high school with Rush and hung out with him some, although they didn't stay in touch.

If I remember correctly, Rush was for free markets with a level playing field, generally against BigGov, generally for less govt spending and regulation, generally against excessive taxes, and pro-life.  In a sane world, that may not be far right, but the leftists in this country are so far away from that they are over the horizon.

I agree with this, but at the same time, I've always felt we shouldn't be posting vitriolic comments in obit threads, even if it's Ted Kennedy. Or even Robin Williams! Starting another thread for that stuff is really easy. I bet those threads would get more comments than the obits.

I asked my friend where he got all his awesome anti Clinton info from and he said "Rush"
My friend was a commie and I was amazed he would listen to Rush.
my complete transformation is due to Rush, the treatment of Monica by liberals and believing the Constitution meant I could own guns.

Rush was a seriously funny guy, only really smart people can be funny on that level.

I heard from sum radio dood this morning that the family had a low-profile funeral for Rush in St. Louis (even though they're based in Cape Girardeau).

I don't know what position Rush took on the laws against funeral protests. There's no rights violation involved in outlawing such. Look at where we are now. You want to have a funeral for a good man who famously did invaluable work for our country? You better hide it. Meanwhile, George Floyd is endlessly eulogized, despite being a drug-addled creep whose death had nothing to do with his race.
