Title: Kali Carbon Suckers for Globular Warning
Post by: HankB on April 19, 2021, 12:15:20 PM
And yet another example of Kalifornia lunacy -

https://www.yahoo.com/news/clocks-running-climate-change-california-120003971.html

Kali is planning to build giant vacuum cleaners to suck CO2 out of the air, mix it with water, and either pump it underground or use it industrially. (Kali still has industry? Really?)

The story says it's "a monumentally expensive" undertaking, which tells you all you really need to know - expensive (make that monumentally expensive) public works projects are a great way to convert public funds into private fortunes. And THAT is the entire point.

How much CO2 this project can suck out of the atmosphere is going to pale in comparison to how much money it's going to suck out of tax papers wallets and divert to  friends and family of politicians

Two things that California has too much of: water and electricity.

The art of industrial-scale carbon removal — sucking emissions from the atmosphere and storing them underground — has long been an afterthought in climate-action circles: too expensive, too controversial, too unproven.

But as the deadline to avert climate catastrophe barrels nearer, the Biden administration is making the technologies prominent in its plans, and California is scrambling to figure out how to put them to use get as much of the money as possible.

Edited for clarity.

Here's the key to the whole thing:

Quote
The technology has been deployed in modest demonstration projects — including one in Menlo Park — for years but never at a scale large enough to make a meaningful dent in emissions. With the cost of running the machines on the decline and the willingness to consider increasingly outside-the-box solutions on the rise, as well as a new administration in Washington promising an infusion of federal subsidies, the vacuum approach is suddenly getting a lot of attention.

Naturally, California is highly concerned about this climate "crisis" -- but not concerned enough to spend their own money on it. But, as soon as the feral [sic] government opens the purse, it suddenly becomes a high priority.

Why don't they just plant more trees?

They  can plant a million trees or cover half the state with these "carbon vacuum cleaners". It still won't put a statistically significant dent into the carbon output of China and much of the third world.

For a bunch of "global citizens", they have zero understanding of global geography and the size of the planet and atmosphere. It might be cheaper and more effective for them to put a dome over CA.

CO2 = life

The left is crazy, among other things.

When people who think nothing of throwing Billions of dollars of government money at problems are candid enough to call something "monumentally expensive", you know it's WAY too expensive.

Rising CO2 => rising temperatures has become an article of faith on the left.  Now, is CO2 a “greenhouse gas”.  Yes.  Are humans putting more CO2 in the atmosphere than there would likely be without our effects?  Yes.

So why aren’t temperatures on a steady path upwards (they’ve basically flatlined for 20 years)?  Because it’s not just a simple linear relationship between CO2 concentration and global average temperatures.  The relationship is more like a logarithmic one, and it shows a large influence by increasing concentrations when they are low, diminishing to almost no influence once higher concentrations are achieved.  CO2 can only absorb so much heat.  For a (more or less) constant solar output of energy once you put a certain amount of CO2 in the atmosphere you’re capturing almost all of the available energy content from the sun in the band that CO2 can absorb.  That concentration is pretty close to where we are now (close enough that we are at least off the steep part of the curve).  In order for temperatures to increase meaningfully from here due to additional CO2 the energy from the sun would also have to increase.

The converse of this however is true that reducing CO2 concentrations will reduce global average temperatures because we can take advantage of the steepening curve going the other direction.

Granted, cooling the earth is foolish.  Warm temperatures and increasing CO2 levels (so long as they stay under the amount that actually poisons animal life) generally correlate to prosperity and increasing carrying capacity in terms of food production.

....but..but we have to do something!   ;)

Maybe we could just saturate California with monoethanol amine. It's what we used on subs for the scrubbers.

California does suck, so maybe the plan isn't so far fetched.

Just consider - industry puts out somewhere around 40 gigatons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually. It seems like a lot, but it's actually a tiny, tiny fraction of the atmosphere, which weighs around 5.5 quadrillion tons.(Haven't done the math myself, just took the number off the web.) Now, just imagine for a moment how much air would have to be processed to get even ONE gigaton of CO2 out. This would require an industrial effort dwarfing the Manhattan Project, Apollo moon landing program, and the Interstate Highway programs combined.

Then there's the power generation - carbon free power generation - required to run these plants.

It's a boondoggle/scam which utterly dwarfs everything the late Bernie Madoff did. Even AOC must be embarrassed, since by comparison her Green New Deal is trivial, costing a mere 93 trillion dollars.

Next up, someone will propose putting a dam across the Straits of Gibraltar and draining the Med to make room to plant more trees as a carbon sink.

More and more I'm coming to believe nearly everything is a scam, grift or ponzi scheme.

I always used to wonder about the verse in Gods word that says "for the love of money is the root of all evil".  I just defaulted to linking it to the commandment "thou shalt not covet".

Now having fallen down the rabbit hole these last few years, getting red pilled etc whatever ... I realize a very important fact of reality was being stated very clearly.

The principalities, powers and rulers of this world are monomaniacally consumed with the accumulation of wealth to a degree us plebes cannot even imagine.

When J. Paul Getty was asked "how much money is enough?" he is said to have replied "a little bit more".

They are going to use very large diesel generators to run the carbon suckers, augmented by a coal fired generator.
