Title: Police dog can sniff out ghost guns
Post by: WLJ on May 16, 2021, 11:59:59 AM
Well that is what the talking heads seem to want you to think. The dog can maybe sniff out a firearm, or more likely the ammo, but no the dog can't actually tell if you gun has a S/N or not.

I believe it was trained on single and double based powders. Not steel and polymer.

If it was then they have rendered it useless.

And people from there are still shocked that I moved away from "paradise".

About to be an expensive house pet once a lawsuit for a lawful carrier hits. Around here I read about a local PD decommissioning their 4 year old officer chompy because the state just legalized MJ and there is no way to untrain the thing.

Sounds as if the dog has a degree in metallurgy.  I can hear Zeke barking to his handler: "that smells like a 400 series stainless steel.  Most likely a revolver, so not a ghost gun".

Sounds like he was trained to hit on automotive vehicles and anything in them.

That works great as far as the police department is concerned.  Gives them justification to search whatever they want.

It does make me wonder if perhaps ABS does have a different smell than more durable polymers like Delrin or whatever a Glock is made from.

Sure is a good thing there aren't cheap, readily available devices that can make ghost guns out of pretty much any polymer you want.  That would sure be embarrassing for this PD.

I’m sure it does, but what benefit does it do to teach a dog to distinguish between polymer types?  None are exclusive enough in use to justify a search.

Powder-trained dogs are only good for areas where guns are restricted (schools, airports, etc). Dope dogs are useful because there is a presumption that an illegal substance justifies a search. A dog trained on scents of materials that are presumptively legal everywhere means no justification for search. It might be useful during a search (like those dogs trained to sniff hidden electronics) I suppose.  Like the electronics dogs, I bet they would spend 99.5% of their time hitting on inane stuff.

I can make a lower from a block of aluminum or so e sheet metal. I don't need to at the moment but crap like this makes me almost what to show them how stupid they are.

But I will not not.

Or make otherwise random pieces of plastic out of the same polymer used in Ghost guns.
