Title: My wife wants me to go to northern Michigan in August
Post by: MillCreek on May 27, 2021, 04:25:32 PM
My wife wants to drag me asks me to accompany her back to northern Michigan to visit her family.  This is going to be at Crystal Lake in August.  I have not been within several hundred miles of this area.  What does the Collective think of this area at this time of year?  Will I be broiled like a pork chop by the sun and eaten alive by mosquitos?  Is there good food there?

Crystal lake in MI is not specific enough, there are a bunch of them.Either way, not going to get broiled.  Depends on where in northern MI, but a lake breeze might require a light jacket for the morning and skeeters might be a problem.

You'll probably be able to find a good pastie or two in the area.

My wife says it is the Crystal Lake that is east of Traverse City and south of Sleeping Bear Dunes.  Which apparently are also on the visit list.

Sounds like this one:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Lake_(Benzie_County,_Michigan)

Michigan in August is generally not a good idea due to the combination of heat and humidity, but this area is sufficiently close to Lake Michigan and sufficiently far north that temps should be tolerable.  That area of Michigan is quite scenic.  A side trip to Luddington would not be a waste of time.

Stay out of Michigan...all of you.  our air and water is polluted, has skeeters the size of alligators, the humidity is usually about 110%, no sunshine, zombies abound; the fast ones, food is turrible, we have no paved roads, we have a pimple epidemic, and if that isn't enough to keep you away, we have a Democrat governor.

If you really want to discourage MillCreek, send him to Flint or Detroit.

One of the reasons that we are making this trip is that my wife was born and raised in Flint; her family moved to Tacoma when she was nine.  So she still has various aunts, uncles, and half-siblings in Michigan.

Established in 1935, Camp Crystal Lake is the home of the Voorhees family.

It's been 20 years since I have been to Traverse City area of Michigan. It's basically a cottage area along the lake shore. It's not going to be hot, the lake is freaking cold to swim in and mosquitoes will eat you alive when the sun goes down.

I liked hitting the foodie places in the smaller towns in the area, they may not be open anymore.

Stone House Bread in Leelanau was one I remember, also a meat locker in the middle of nowhere between Glen Arbor and Traverse City. Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor.

Sleepy Bear dunes was awesome to climb, two steps up, one step back as you climbed the sand dune.

Also watching sunsets on Lake Michigan.

Holy moly! To rent a Toyota Corolla for a week with unlimited mileage is going to cost us $ 1500 with the AARP discount.  Rental through Costco would have been more expensive. Pick up in Grand Rapids and drop off in Marquette. I had read about the squeeze in rental cars due to COVID but this is something.
