I'm OK with it being a Federal holiday, it should be celebrated.

I'm not sure Juneteenth specifically is that big of a deal, but what it represents is.  September 22 or December 6 would probably be as good or better, but if June 19th is the date they want to use then I'm okay with that.

The day republicans ended slavery.

I agree it's a milestone worth celebrating.  I'm a little surprised that they passed it only a day before it going in to effect, but that might just me missing the preliminary talk.  I know it's been all over the media this year, so it's probably my aversion to main stream media that's at fault.

As an aside, as somebody who used to get federal holidays off, I know it's a big disruption to tell an organization that, oh by the way, everybody has tomorrow off.

The day republicans ended slavery.

I don't think so, Jim.

Quote
It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

Was Granger a Republican?

???  Tomorrow is the 18th.  "Juneteenth" is June 19, which is Saturday.  Sometimes holidays fall on a weekend (like Easter)  Did they screw this up and get the date wrong?  ;/

The feds only recognize holidays on weekdays, so they can get a paid day off.

blah-blah If we're going to nitpick, then only Texans and their descendants can observe it. As a now federal holiday, it only makes sense as a celebration of the Republican Party's abolition of slavery. (Not that the GOP will get any credit for it.)

Yes, but don't they always round-up to Monday?

Nope, Saturday holiday goes back to Friday, Sunday holiday goes forward to Monday.

As far as the disruption,  we're making do. Texts are flying, timecards are being changed, but we'll get it done.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.  I guess I could have looked a few calendars and found one where July 4 was on a Saturday.  (I didn't think of that until now)

Seems like for this one, he should have waited until Saturday (on the actual day. Have a little ceremony.) to sign it so it would take effect next year.

Feds are off. A lot of our affiliated companies are off.

But my company? No. It takes an act of God and Dog combined to change the work schedule.

When I started at AT&T they only observed 6 of the Federal holidays.

Beginning of this year they added 3 more (plus added 5 days to everyone's PTO balance).

I suspect that we won't see this one off for some time.

My guess is that they will put Juneteenth on the calendar but take away a preferred and traditional holiday. Not that I care anymore though  =D.

I won't. I think we're all more than a little tired of every institution with any power or influence talking about how much they love black people and hate whiteness. Oh, they're anti-racist, of course. Good holiday, but put in service of a disgusting movement.
