There was an endcap at Walmart today of pies under the Patti LaBelle name. Sweet potato pie, buttermilk pie, and peach cobbler. I have never had or heard of a buttermilk pie, so I snagged one. Boy howdy, was that sweet. Not a lot of flavor other than sweet. I will not buy it again.

I've had one of the Patti LaBelle pies. Don't remember which one. (I think it was sweet potato) Lot of sweet and not a lot of anything else, but that's actually pretty authentic for some of those, and especially for buttermilk pie. The cobbler is probably pretty good but too sweet. Too sweet is the theme that pulls them all together ;) If I ever see a blackberry cobbler I'll try one.

Yeah, buttermilk pie is sweet. Realistically, no sweeter than something like a pecan pie, the other great Southern pie staple.
Most of the recipes you'll find online use 1.5 cups, or more, of white sugar for a 9" pie.
Hum. Found a couple that use 1 cup of white sugar. That might be more palatable.
If you want a recipe for a really good pecan pie that's not too terribly sweet, check out the recipe I posted in Puke Palace vouched recipes for Cranberry Pecan Pie. It's sweet, but the cranberries cut through that.

Southern Buttermilk is another name for Buttermilk Chess. Hard to go wrong when the main ingredients are eggs, buttermilk, butter, and sugar. Dirt easy to make, literally just stirring all the ingredients together and baking.

Sounds like it would go good with a side of cornbread. Does anyone have a good cornbread recipe? >:D

Do you want real cornbread or Yankee cornbread? (or Mexican cornbread, which is hardly cornbread at all but perhaps the tastiest) =D

Can’t say I have ever heard of buttermilk pie in my life
I do enjoy the hell out of sweet potato pie and like it a lot more than pumpkin pie.

You want a chili recipe?
By far the best chili I've ever had. It's still my go to recipe.
This recipe is adapted from a recipe I saw on You Tube. I changed it a bit to adapt it to my chili style. This Is for the crock pot but can be made on the stove top.
It's long, but the results were nothing short of absolutely incredible. The flavor is head and shoulders above anything I've either made or had before.
Prior to starting, fill the bowl of your crock pot with hot water and set it to high to preheat.
Step 1
2 pounds ground turkey
2 packs regular chili seasoning mix (McCormick’s or WalMart) This is in addition to the extra spice added later
2 cans petite diced tomatoes with oregano and garlic
1 can tomato sauce
1 large onion, medium dice
2 to 3 tablespoons minced garlic
2 medium jalapeno peppers, diced
Brown the turkey in oil in a hot pan.
When turkey is mostly browned, move it to the side of the pan, turn the heat down, and add the onion along with a large pinch of salt.
Sweat the onion until it turns translucent.
Add the garlic and cook a few more minutes, being careful not to burn it.
Add the jalapeno peppers
When the peppers have softened, add the chili spice packets and the tomatoes and tomato sauce.
Stir to combine well.
Turn the heat up and bring to a boil.
Turn the heat down and simmer for 10 - 15 minutes.
Step 2.
Drain and rinse 3 cans of beans. I prefer a combination of black and white navy.
Empty the crock pot and add the chili base, leaving the heat on high.
Add the beans.
Cover and cook on high for about 2 hours.
Step 3.
3 T Chili powder
3 T Onion power
1 T Garlic powder
1 T dried oregano
1 T dried basil
Rosemary (optional)
1 t cayenne pepper
1 t Cumin
2 packets Sazon Goya
Juice and zest of 1 lime
Juice and zest of 1 lemon
Add all juice, zest, and spices, mix well, turn heat back to low, and cook for an additional 4 to 6 hours, stirring occasionally.
Note: If at this point your chili is too watery, leave the heat on high and take the lid off for about an hour.
Step 4.
About an hour before serving, chop a large handful of cilantro, including stems. Mix into the chili.
Serve with additional cilantro, onions, sharp cheddar cheese, or sour cream.

OH WAAAAAAAAAAAA! YOUR CHILI HAS BEANS! THAT MEANS IT'S NOT CHILI! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Suck it up, Buttermilk.
Another endless, and bullshit, controversy.
Chili, at least as it developed in the 1800s and beyond, was one of those ubiquitous foods that didn't have a set recipe and which had endless variations based on what meat was available, what spices were available, and a lot of times, because it was also poor people food, simply what was available.
Chili with beans is as authentic as chili with tomatoes, verde chili, or white chili.

Beans/no_beans is a false controversy. Real chili doesn't have tomatoes; you can add beans if you want but there should more meat than beans. (I sometimes add tomatoes to mine anyway because I'm a loser like everyone else)
When I do add tomatoes, they are a minor ingredient just to stretch the recipe and because Wife likes them. The chili is plenty red just from the dried peppers.

Chess pie is another name I think. Even my relatives from the south consider it ungodly sweet. It's gross to me, about one step lower than pecan pie.

My wife made up a recipe for pecan pie that is not super sweet. I love it. I eat very few sweets so she got rid of the molasses and uses just enough light brown sugar so it works.
