Title: Anyone buy an online mattress?
Post by: K Frame on September 19, 2022, 09:12:50 AM
Something like a Nectar or Caspar?

Any thoughts on it if you did? Worth it? Would you do it again?

My last three mattresses have been Amazon buys of Sleep Innovation memory foam mattresses. I've been really happy with all of them. They show up as a vacuum sealed roll, I drag them into whatever bedroom, place the roll on the bedframe and carefully cut the seal off. Ten minutes later I have a mattress on the bed.

Do you need to let the mattress expand for a couple of days before you sleep on it?

And wow, I certainly like those prices a lot more than the prices for a Casper...

They recommend 24 hours. The mattress seems to reach full expansion in an hour, so I guess the 24 hours is just to make sure. Plus they do have a bit of a chemical odor from being sealed up, so the 24 hours pretty much lets that dissipate. I detect a slight odor for maybe a week, but after that, nothing.

Also, FYI, this brand, or at least the model I bought is a very firm mattress. That's my preference so it's great for me.

Got mine from Sam's. Had to take it out of the cardboard box to get it to fit in the back seat but it's nice being able to take home a queen size mattress inside of a Focus. Just remember to not cut open the bag until you get it where it's going.

The MyPillow guy is selling mattresses, too. His goal in life is to help everyone have the best possible sleep, so his products are the best there is.

He says so himself in his own commercials . . . over . . . and over . . . and over . . . and over . . .

https://www.mypillow.com/mattresses

I have a mypillow mattress topper, which I bought from Kohls's for 90% off (plus coupon savings!) when they were cancelling Mike Lindell a couple of years ago. I really like it, I think it's very good,  but I wouldn't use all the superlatives Mike uses in his commercials.
Title: Re: Anyone buy an online mattress?

Yeah, Mike Lindell just creeps me out...

The one thing I'm a bit concerned about is not actually being able to try the mattress before I sleep on it. If I get from one of the online companies, I can test it out for weeks or months. Not sure if I can do that with an Amazon purchase. But then again, it's cheap enough that if I have to can I always make a switch later and use the first one for a guest mattress.

It looks like I should be able to flop it right on top of my current mattress base unit, which is in fine shape.

Ben, which specific one do you have right now? Does it sleep hot for you in the summer? I'm seeing some comments about that, but that's something of a crap shoot, is my guess.

Looks like the Sleep Innovations Marley is leading the pack right now. Need to do some more research and the like, but I need to do something soon. My current mattress just isn't cutting it anymore.

Hey Ben, question for you... How easy is it to turn over on this mattress?

I've slept on some memory foam mattresses where once you sink down in, you're there to stay....

We have had the same experience as Ben, but we bought our mattress on sale online from Costco.  Very very happy with it, especially when we got the adjustable base a couple of months later.

We bought a Novosbed mattress online three years ago. Basically just like any other bed in a box as far as delivery and getting it ready. We love it as far as comfort goes.

1)

I have this one (bought 4 years ago), which it looks like is unavailable now:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EAGA4FA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

Amazon shows one that seems to have the same description, but who knows if it's the same:

https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-12-inch-Mattress-Warranty/dp/B003CT37LK/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?crid=1U1YW289UYT2A&keywords=Sleep%2BInnovations%2BShiloh%2B12%2BInch%2BMemory%2BFoam%2BMattress%2Bwith%2BVentilated%2BSuretemp%E2%84%A2%2BFoam%2Bfor%2BBreathability%2C%2BCalifornia%2BKing%2BSize%2C%2BBed%2Bin%2Ba%2BBox%2C%2BMedium%2BFirm%2BSupport&qid=1663597262&s=home-garden&sprefix=sleep%2Binnovations%2Bshiloh%2B12%2Binch%2Bmemory%2Bfoam%2Bmattress%2Bwith%2Bventilated%2Bsuretemp%2Bfoam%2Bfor%2Bbreathability%2C%2Bcalifornia%2Bking%2Bsize%2C%2Bbed%2Bin%2Ba%2Bbox%2C%2Bmedium%2Bfirm%2Bsupport%2Cgarden%2C139&sr=1-1-fkmr0&th=1

It appears to be an updated version that has a "breathable" built in topper (to your "sleeps hot" question) and a choice on firmness.

If I remember right, my original mattress slept a little warm for me in the Summer in CA. They don't believe in AC in Santa Barbara, so the warm nights certainly didn't help.

I've not really noticed "sleeping hot" with my current mattress here. I keep the thermo at 72 for nights in the Summer or open the window, so generally a range of 67-72 for sleeping in the Summer. It appears the new version of the mattress has a layer that addresses "sleeping hot".

2)

I don't have an issue turning over in the mattress. I will say that it is noticeably more effort to get out of bed than with a spring mattress. Not like a daily pain in the ass or anything, but if you say, threw out your back or something, it might be a chore to get out. Back when I had gallbladder surgery, for three days after, getting out of the mattress was not fun. I was inching my way to the edge of the mattress and then rolling my body over the edge. Trying to get out normally sent shooting pain through my core muscles. A spring mattress certainly helps "spring" you out of bed easier. Again though, barring an injury or something, no issues.

I'm also tall and use one of those tall steel memory foam frames that lets you store crap under the bed. It might be easier getting out with a shorter height bedframe.

SWMBO and I helped her bestie unload and set up a compressed mattress. Kinda cool how small they can compress to. We've slept on it a couple times as it's in her guest room. A bit on the mushy side but still comfy.

SWMBO and I did a hybrid thing... we got a very firm mattress and put a 4" cool gel memory foam topper on it. We both love it - supportive without being hard, plush without being mushy. Plus, firm or extra firm mattresses are often stupid cheap comparatively, and a good topper will run you, oh, maybe $150.  That way, if the memory foam starts to break down or collapse, you're replacing a cheap topper rather than a $2000 mattress. We've had ours for almost five years and it's still fine. The setup also seems to be much easier on the mattress. Even with my fat ass, the mattress hasn't sagged or settled at all.

"you're replacing a cheap topper rather than a $2000 mattress. "

No way in freaking hell am I spending $2000 on a mattress.

That's why I like these memory foam ones. Even if they do get mushy or get "memory lumps", even if you have to buy a new one every five years, it's cheaper than buying one of some of the traditional mattresses out there. Plus there are a lot of recommendations for not keeping a mattress more than ten years for health reasons. I don't know how accurate those are, but at $300-$600 a pop, a memory foam mattress delivered to your door in a box is easy enough and cheap enough to replace every five or ten years.

I'm spoiled. There's a small, local mattress factory in the next town to the north, not more than 10 miles from my house. The last two mattresses we bought, my wife and I went to the factory, sat down with the owner/CEO, told him what we wanted and what price range we wanted to be in, then he took us out into the factory, showed us what we could get in the price range we wanted, and we signed an order. About ten days later their truck delivered the new mattress, and their guys took the old one.

One time we bought the mattress and base together, the other time we bought just the mattress.

No.

Costcos around here are absolute zoos. I can't take the crowds. And, for a single guy, it just doesn't make much sense.  I have my neighbors occasionally pick up a few things for me.

Makes all kinds of sense for a single guy with a chest freezer, a big pantry, and a yearning for the zombie apocalypse.  =D

I will agree on crowds. Mine here is nowhere near as bad as my old one, or God forbid, the one time I was in one in LA, but I sure do miss the covid senior hours. I got really accustomed to a store at 10% of capacity if I got there at 0900. Now I'm back to dodging multiple morons with their carts in the middle of the aisle and their heads up their asses.

We tried a Ghost Bed and didn't like it, and the "return" process and refund was an absolute nightmare. Long story short, Goodwill and the Salvation Army, allegedly the only authorized "return" avenues, both blew off the pickup. Ultimately, a charity called Share Town took it. Three months total to get a refund, during which time the mattress sat on our front porch Iike proper hillbillies.

Ever since we got our first memory foam mattress (about 18 years ago) I have wanted to figure out the stopping power of the mattress, is it cover or concealment? Will it act like a Newtonian fluid and get hard as it is compressed rapidly of will it barely slow the bullet down?  Or how many inches will it take to stop a bullet? So many questions.

We will be getting a new mattress soon and I will experiment with the mattress before the dump run. :)

Well, I'm a single guy, I have a big upright freezer, and a substantial pantry (and a basement that has TONS of room).

As for the zombie apocalypse, I live and work in DC metro, so I live that *expletive deleted*it every day.

I've belonged to both Costco and BJs over the years and I will admit that it's nice. I've thought about joining. I worked right next to a Costco for over 3 years and always thought about joining, but never did, mainly because of the crowds.

There are some things that I'd love to get at Costco on a regular basis, most importantly the Ling Ling pot stickers. Those things are awesome.

I was actually surprised that even a .380 penetrated. Might have to Kevlar line the sides of the mattress.  =D

"I was actually surprised that even a .380 penetrated."

To be honest, I'm not.

Memory foam, while resilient, isn't particularly strong. It's very easy to tear it with your fingers. It has very low tensile strength.

Durable goods and dish/laundry soaps. Even when single I easily paid for the Sams membership cost in savings on everyday things like paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap, and shelf-stable pantry items. Add in the misc other stuff through the year and it was a good deal. Good optical dept, too. Not the greatest selection of frames but they use Nikon labs for their optics and I've had excellent results with them. I figure Costco has similar offerings.

Dish soap is one of the things that I have my neighbors get me.

It takes me between 9 and 12 months to go through one of the jugs.

I've been using the same roll of paper towels since... March or April.

Toilet paper? Most of my... "downloading" is done at the office. A 15-pack lasts me 6 months.

It just doesn't make much sense for me given the levels of stuff that I use.

Before my daughter moved out a roll of TP would last maybe 3 days.
After she moved out ~3 weeks maybe longer. But I am in the habit of doing my business immediately before my morning shower.

TMTMI...

I'm two blocks from an Aldi. I mostly buy coffee, half'n'half, sausage, eggs, burger, buns, cold cut stuff, and the like.

Wally World is slightly cheaper on the stuff, but is about a 12-14 mile round trip... If I'm in that area, I'll stock up, but...

Amazon is significantly higher on food type stuffs... Good for oddball things that I can't find locally, but... I'm in the south center of a big metro.

I'm probably gonna get one of the Amazon mattresses for my 62nd birthday. How do I do a go-fund-me thing with Amazon?

We bought an adjustable Sleep Number bed over 25 years ago.  Still going strong.  Swmbo put a 3" memory foam topper on just because with a slightly padded regular topper to that.  It provides a great night's sleep and you can play with the support you want.  They are even much better now than back in the day with a lot of options.  It won't be cheap, but you won't have to buy another one...maybe swap out the memory foam topper every few years.  For all I know they come with that now if you want.

OK, so I'm looking at mattresses again. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Sleep Innovations based on price alone. Sorry, but I just don't see paying nearly $2,000 for a mattress when there's a similar, and just as highly rated, mattress for a quarter of that price.

I"m assuming that, given my weight, I need a thicker mattress, so I'm looking at the 12".

Or should I be looking at the 14" mattresses?

Hey Ben,

If you're looking at another mattress, the Marley is 22% off at Amazon right now.

I e-mailed the company yesterday asking about weight ratings and they suggested the Marley 12" cooling gel, so that's what I got.

It was $306 on sale, and with tax came in at just under $330.

It should be here Friday.

Hopefully my knee will continue to get better and I'll actually be able to get it upstairs.

Mattress came late this morning.

I figured it was going to have to live in my dining room for a couple of weeks until my knee got stronger and I could get it upstairs.

But the more I looked at it, the more my mind churned to, of all places, Big Bang Theory AND firearms design.

BBT because Leonard and Sheldon used science (inclined planes, math, etc.) to get a heavy box upstairs for Penny by sliding it on the stairs.
Firearms design because one of the methods of locking a gun's action on firing is via the "tilting bolt" method.

I looked at the box and realized that if I slid it up a couple of stairs, I could then "tilt the bolt" to lock it in place on the stairs until I could get up far enough to push it a couple of more steps.

My God it worked like a charm. I did NO twisting with my lower body, made sure my legs were set and square, and pushed with my upper body.

My new memory foam mattress is inflating on my bed as I type this.

I love how my brain thinks weird and solves problems.

And speaking of the knee, it's not really better. I made a HUGE mistake yesterday when I figured it was better so I could skip putting on the brace.

Huge HUGE mistake. By the time I got to my office I could barely walk it was so bad.

I left early, got my brace and then went out and bought a cane.

I took today off work to rest it, and Seren is staying at daycare the next couple of days so I don't have to try to walk her.

My guess (and that of a friend of mine who is a doctor) is that it's a grade 2 sprain with significantly more ligament tearing and all I've been doing is continually aggravating it by treating it as if it's a grade 1.

This getting old *expletive deleted*it is a young man's game.

But, the can is helping me get around, and the knee is feeling better for the rest.

Going to take a bit of getting used to, but the nap I took this afternoon was quite restful.

This getting old *expletive deleted*it is a young man's game.

No doubt about that. Total knee done in July, new eyeball (Intraocular lens, for cataract) last week and will be getting a brand new shoulder joint the first week of Jan. I have a fishing trip in Dec or it would be earlier. ;)

And this morning the knee IS better. Both knees are better, actually.

Lots of upper and lower leg muscle stiffness, but significantly less pain in the knee itself.

And the mattress? Very restful sleep last night. I really think I'm going to like it long-term.

I guess I am fortunate in at age 62, all I have had done is bilateral cataracts and the left hip replacement from the bicycle crash.

On top of everything else, my eyes SUCK! Got "young" cataracts and severe nearsightedness.

A week in with this bad boy and I am LOVING it. I've not slept this well or soundly in a long time.

It's a PERFECT combination of soft and firm. I tend to be a side sleeper, and this thing is wonderful for that. I used to wake up with shoulder pain in my right shoulder if I spent the entire night on my right side. Now? No problem at all.

The one thing I have found is that I don't need nearly as many pillows with this mattress. I always slept with 4 -- a contour memory foam pillow that works well with my CPAP and side sleeping, a pretty bulky non-memory foam pillow, and two thinner pillows. Now I really only need the memory foam pillow unless I'm using all of them to prop up my back when I'm reading in bed. If I try to use more than 1 pillow to sleep I find that my neck and bag get severely torqued out of position and it's very uncomfortable.

This mattress is even good for back sleeping, which is something I've not done in many years, primarily because my lower back wouldn't be properly supported and I'd wake up all kinds of sore. It also didn't work with my sleep apnea. Now, though, my back is very nicely supported, and with the CPAP I don't need to worry about the apnea as much.

It's hard to tell right now because of my ongoing knee issues has fired up my entire body, it seems like, but I'm thinking that this mattress is going to result in tons less morning stiffness and pain.

Ben, thanks so very much for the Sleep Innovations recommendation!

No problemo.

How are you finding it for getting in and out of with the current knee problem? About the only negative I find with the memory foam is that it's harder to get out of if you do something like pull a back muscle.

Otherwise, Yeah, I find memory foam so much nicer than spring mattresses, which I always notice now when I stay at a hotel. Though I've noticed that many higher end hotels are doing memory foam now.

So far no problem getting out of bed. I sleep on the right side of the bed, and it's my right knee that is having the problem, so I'm able to kick my leg out and get it onto the floor and supported before I get the rest of myself off the bed.

It's a bit more of a challenge to roll over, as can be expected, but not too terribly bad.

Overall, though, the quality of sleep I'm getting is just insanely good.

Even better, I just went online to leave a review for it, and the price has gone back up to $389.

I paid $306 plus tax for it.

Saving that much money makes Mike a happy boy.  =)
