Title: Another Car Plows Through Another Christmas Parade
Post by: Ben on November 20, 2022, 07:30:28 AM
In this case it was apparently a vehicle participating in the parade, and one girl was killed.

Information is lacking. On the one hand, it appears this may have been an accident, as they said the driver was yelling that he couldn't control the vehicle and was honking the horn. On the other hand, they arrested him. The charges were interesting:

Quote
Landen Christopher Glass, 20, was arrested for misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless, improper equipment, unsafe movement, and carrying a firearm in a parade.

I'm curious about the firearm charge.

Looks like the truck is a fairly late model GMC. Does anyone know if those still use those archaic "key" thingies to start and stop the engine, or have GMC trucks changed over to the radio transmitter dongles and a button on the dashboard? If they use a button -- how do you shut off the engine in those vehicles? With a "key" (for those old enough to remember those), all you have to do is turn the key, and the engine miraculously stops engining.

Notice the left-front brake rotor:

Looks like he had been standing on the brakes HARD for a bit trying to stop and the "screeching tires" could be caused by the engine overpowering the brakes. Hitting the key/kill switch should have stopped the engine though unless it was a runaway diesel.

Meanwhile the dems are thinking "how can we blame an AR-15 for this?"

Any reason why he couldn't have put it in N or P ?

Kids these days don't even know how to change a flat tire or check the oil. Again, more information is needed, but from what I've seen, this looks like an accident / vehicle malfunction and the kid simply didn't know what to do.

I recall practicing emergency stuff both on the crappy 1970's era simulators and in the car when learning to drive in grade 10. I guess many schools don't do drivers ed anymore. I have no idea what the standards are for private instruction.

Panic. All they can think is "MUST MASH BRAKE!" He did good to honk the horn and yell.

Agreed. If you're not trained for something, panic is going to set in. That he didn't freeze and at least did something is a feather in his cap, AFAIC.

I have seen trucks that were set to idle fairly high such that you had to hold the brake to keep them from accelerating.  The one I am thinking of is gas.

That's kind of what it looks like to me but as is typical of the MSM there is no way we know what the *expletive deleted*ck really happened yet.
I'd also doubt that the 20 year old kid was the actual owner of that truck so some liability should fall to the owner as far as vehicle problems are concerned. I also wouldn't be surprised if the gun was just "in the truck" and belonged to the trucks owner. Which, may well be the young mans dad.

We watched a guy total his 240Z at an Auto-X race because he pushed wide on a turn and was headed straight at a light pole. He locked his brakes and skid dead center into it. Had he just taken his foot off the brake and the gas, he had tons of room to steer around either side of it and would have regained steering allowing him to do so.

a few yrs ago I worked as a temp labor for a hertz car rental - I really disliked the "new" controls .... if I ever get a new car I would spend a few days getting familiar before really using it to commute

Seems like they threw the book at him and I'd like to know why.

Lousyanna has a law that prohibits guns "in" (or around) a parade. TECHNICALLY, the way it is written, it applies to those with a CHP. They apply it to ANYONE and EVERYONE, CHP aside.
