Department of Interior to allow private weapons carry once again
« on: December 05, 2008, 02:32:25 PM »
Fairfax, Va. - The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), through the National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has announced the final amended version of its changes to rules on carrying of firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges. DOI’s move will restore the rights of law-abiding gun owners who wish to transport and carry firearms for lawful purposes on most DOI lands, and will make federal law consistent with the state law in which these public lands are located. The National Rifle Association (NRA) led the effort to amend the existing policy regarding the carrying and transportation of firearms on these federal lands.

Is this something that will survive whoever the new Interior Secretary will be? I hope so.

I have no feeling either way. For all I know the country isn't going to survive the new administration and the current political climate.

Given the past statements and positions made by the President-elect, I'd be surprised if it lasts to January 22nd.

From the MSNBC article on the story:

The park rule will be published in the Federal Register next week and take effect 30 days later, well before Obama takes office Jan. 20. Overturning the rule could take months or even years, since it would require the new administration to restart the lengthy rule-making process.

I think we all remember back when Bill Clinton left office, he left a mess of last-minute regulations (largely overlooked, as they were overshadowed by the list of last-minute pardons), that the Bush Administration promptly discarded upon their entrance into the White House. A simple reversion to the previous regulations was all that was required.

That's the kind of crazy *expletive deleted*it I was wondering about...

Like I said, it's going to be interesting...right before I hand in my resignation letter, badge, and key.

I knew a fellow who used to work for the NPS.

Among other things he told me about was a plan to put flea collars on prairie dogs to combat bubonic plague ...

I'm not at a large park, or out West, but I could tell you some crazy stuff that already goes on...even the smallest park is screwed up badly as far as administration goes...

Oh, and this is THE prarie dog solution.

Good luck with that. They're like giant ferrets on amphetamines if you try to handle them. I was wearing full arm leather welding gloves, as I knew better.

I'm pretty sure the reasons Clinton's regulations were so easily discarded is that he waited too long - the 30 or 60 days needed for them to take effect hadn't passed by the time Bush took office. It appears Bush recognized that mistake and got his done ahead of time - meaning it should be more difficult for Obama to repeal them.
You have to respect the president, whether you agree with him or not.
Obama, however, is not the president since a Kenyan cannot legally be the U.S. President ;/

Micro, ummm, I vote "NO!"  The fall out will dribble on me and increase commuting time with the zombie outbreaks and giant cockroaches and rats shooting at each other.

Can't we have Lord Obama create a Civilian Varmit Regiment or some such ant hill name and kill the varmits?  You know, like Mao did with The Four Pests Campaign. =D

Actually, not all that crazy.

You wouldn't need to put collars on all of the dogs, just a small percentage.

Okay, I'll hold the collars and hand them to you.

You catch the prairie dogs and put the collars on them.

Virginia, Arizona are a few of the other states that allow open carry, too.
This means I can wander along some new fishing grounds I found recently and keep my pistol on me.
