MSN Explorer problem.

OK, I don't use MSN, but a buddy does and its gone FUBAR on his machine, keeping them from getting to their email and the like.  I'm going out to his place to brew a batch of Mead this saturday, and take at look at whats amiss on the PC (I can't get in remote unfortunately).  

Whats occuring is that when they try to start MSN Explorer, it generates a non-recoverable errorr (codes and the like as yet unknown) and attempts to restart MSN Explorer.  

Any of you folks have experience with this peice of software, and pointers on what to look for in finding/fixing the problem?  I'll be scouring the event logs for clues once I get there.

I would uninstall MSN Explorer (Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs-->Add/Remove Windows Components, deselect MSN Explorer, OK). If he insists on using MSN for his browsing, I would reset the computer, go back to the same window, then reinstall it. That would be the simplest way to (hopefully) clear out the problems. Does Internet Explorer work correctly on the computer? If it does, then the above should fix it. After uninstalling it, you may have to root out things left behind in the program directory and possibly the registry. But hopefully a standard un/reinstall should fix it.

I agree re: the fact that Firefox rawks, BUT:
There are some important Windows Updates (and I NEVER let it just 'happen'--I prefer to do it manually) that I've not figured out how to dnld and install WITHOUT IE.

That's the ONLY reason I keep IE around...
has anyone addressed this issue successfully?
