Societal compulsion to quote movies

I think that pop culture, being "popular" is often a common link found throughout society among largely different subsets of people. It's like a shared event between different people that gives them something in common, but without having actually shared an event together.
Once someone posts or says some dialog from a recognizable film, it's only appropriate for the listener to respond with more dialog from the film, or from a related film to tell the speaker "Hey, I know what you're talking about -- I saw that film too and found it good/funny/etc. And here's something that ties into it!"
