Dear Zxcvbob:

Thank you for contacting me about the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT) Act.  I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.

As you may know, the PACT Act is aimed at preventing illicit tobacco trafficking.  The bill passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee with bipartisan support on November 19, 2009 and was signed into law by the President on March 31, 2010. I will keep your concerns in mind should related legislation come before the Senate for consideration.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me.  One of the most important parts of my job is listening to what the people of Minnesota have to say to me.  I am here in our nation's capital to do the public's business and to serve the people of our state.  I hope you will contact me again about matters of concern to you.

Here's my reply:

I do not recall contacting you regarding the PACT Act, but it's interesting that I would receive a reply 2 years later.  Perhaps you meant to send me your standardized (form letter) reply about the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act?  I can see where those two might end up next to each other on a list.
