Upgraded my geek credentials...
« on: June 04, 2006, 04:52:16 AM »
by passing the Amateur Radio Technician Class exam.  I took the "no code" version and passed with a 32/35.

I had been putting off attempting the exam because I would have to track down a testing opportunity and pay for the exam.  However, I noticed a sign at the local fairgrounds last week stating a hamfest was going to be there Sunday (today).  When I checked out the details online, I learned they would be offering free exams to anyone who walked up.  I couldn't resist anymore, so I found a free online study guide and started studying Thursday night.  With that study guide, I went from scoring 20/35 (I took a practice exam first to see where I was weak) to 30-34/35 via online exams with very little effort.

Off to find my pocket protector...

Chris

Which site?  The practice exams are at http://www.eham.net/exams/.

The study guide can be found here: http://www.geocities.com/w8bbs/
That's all I used besides the online practice exams.

Congrats Chris.

So what ARE the height restrictions on radio towers in your neighborhood? Gotta gear up for some DXing ya know Tongue

IIRC, it's no more than 30ft above the peak of the roof (according to FCC rules regarding antennas and HOAs, but I'm not entirely sure how that relates to HAM usage since that rule is mainly oriented towards TV and AM/FM radio reception).  Since I have a 3story townhouse, that's pretty danged tall. Smiley

In all honesty, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this.  I'm not really interested in getting on a radio and chatting with random strangers.  I'm more interested in "toying" with the technology.
