Montana gun bills 2013
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:14:55 PM »
All of them good.

Link to the NRAILA page that covers them though not up to date at least has links to the bills.  http://www.nraila.org/legislation/state-legislation/2013/2/montana-multiple-pro-gun-bills-to-be-heard-next-week.aspx

Permitless CCW is past the 2nd reading in the house and looks like it will pass the 3rd reading tomorrow.  After that it goes to the house where it is expected to pass there too.

Same story on allowing suppressors for hunting.

The bills for allowing CC in banks, restaurants, government buildings, and etc is close behind.

A bill for suppressors for hunting that does not allow their use during big game season, but is open for wolves afterwards passed the Senate and is on the way to the House.  I worry about this one, it could be used as a tool for some folks on the border to look pro-gun while not opening up suppressors to the majority of hunting.

The sticky part on all of these is the new governor (D).  That is why I am not getting my hopes up at all, the voting thus far has been more or less down party lines.  I believe all of these will get to the governor's desk, but after that....   eh..  maybe.

Hell, our socialist governor Granholm signed the Shall Issue law, the Castle Doctrine and No Retreat law here in Michigan.  Don't give up hope.  Your governor wants to be in office more than he wants to toe the line.  All you have to do is get hundreds of thousands of notes to him letting him know where the bear shits in the buckwheat.

Wow..  started listening to the audio from the committee on 2/15.  One guy, Trey Cathey, speaking as a proponent is a whack job.  Starting going off on commies, nazis, fascists, and socialists.  Not helping...

The Montana Wildlife Federation opposes the suppressors when hunting bill.  He thinks that the bill will legalize all suppressors, even those not registered under the NFA.  Idiot...  then he says it makes game warden's jobs harder ignoring the part where suppressors don't make it silent.

The head of enforcement for the FWP who lied last year in testimony on last years version of this bill.  He laid out the same old BS, no big game with silencers.  His best logic is Wyoming does it this way so we should too.

This is a question asked in genuine ignorance on my part with no agenda (no snarky gotcha intended). How will silencers aid in hunting?

I had always thought of silencers as being only useful for target shooting.

They don't change anything to aid in the act of hunting, they aid in the protection of the hunter's hearing.

ok. I might need to reevaluate my concern level regarding hearing damage from occasional gunshots.

You should. Gunshots are WELL above established safe limits for hearing. In other words, you ARE damaging your hearing with every shot fired.

Personally, I don't hunt a lot, and am ok with sacrificing some hearing, so I don't wear hearing protection when hunting. However, supressors work, and if they were legal I wouldn't have to damage my hearing to avoid going to jail for a victimless crime.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Why not use the electronic clipping muffs, if you don't/can't use a suppressor? You can hear the world around you, and won't suffer hearing loss.

Wyoming just made silencers legal for hunting  =D

Governor Bull**** is the unknown here.  Why don't people understand that the Democrats will never support your gun rights, whatever they say to get elected?  Our former democrat governor kept a rifle illegally in his office and then vetoed constitutional carry.

Hard to shoulder a gun properly with a pair of muffs on your head.  Ditto getting your hat/hood snugged down properly (not all hunting is done when it's 80 deg F and sunny).

When it is 80 degrees and sunny, the last thing I want to do is wear ear muffs!

I lost a good bit of hearing from shooting sans ear protection as a kid. Of course I lost more in the Marines shooting SMAW's with inadequite ear protection and being in fire fights with none. The turret gun on an up armor hmmv is pretty damn loud on the inside. :)

I wonder how much a supressor would silence my .300wm.

Most of the appropriately rated suppressors out there are supposed to get a .330wm below 140db.  For comparison, an unsuppressed .22lr out of a rifle barrel is around 150db to 155db.

Real poachers would use crossbows if they really wanted to remain silent. Perhaps they should equip all bows with a device that emits a loud report so their jobs wiull be easier.

Indeed, the supressor I bought for my 338LM is supposed to take it down to the same as a suppressed 308...which is -quiet-

No suprise..   HB 304 (CCW Law change) vetoed by the governor.  At least he didn't use a branding iron...

When he replied to the very nice email I sent he called all the gun bills political theatre.  So is his veto.

I don't get the people in Montana - they vote in pro-gun legislature and anti-gun governor (again!).

Weren't they also going to make this a referendum for public vote in 2014 ?
