$3.99 most places in town this morning. Couple of truck stops on the interstate are $4.09.

It takes me 2.25 gallons of gas to make my round trip commute of 49 miles.  So lately, I think about each trip to the office costing me $ 10.

$4.19 locally. Replaced the fuel pump in my truck last weekend, no more leaks when it's running.

Two days ago, prices in IL-ANNOY just east of St. Louis were running around $4.459/gal.
Yesterday, many stations jumped to $4.759, compared to the national "average" of $4.40/gal.
From what I have heard, it is even worse up around Chicago.

Fits a pattern
We keep releasing violent criminals but can't under stand why violent crime keeps going up.
We keep relaxing penalties but can't under stand why shoplifting keeps going up
We keep raising taxes and fees but can't understand why they now want to charge more
We keep paying people not to work but can't understand why people don't want to work
We keep lowering education standards but can't understand why people are getting dumber

From the article

Quote
"Due to lack of industry interest in leasing in the area, the Department will not move forward with the proposed Cook Inlet OCS oil and gas lease sale 258," a DOI spokesperson told FOX Business in a statement Thursday.

"The Department also will not move forward with lease sales 259 and 261 in the Gulf of Mexico region, as a result of delays due to factors including conflicting court rulings that impacted work on these proposed lease sales," the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson also told FOX Business that "there are 10.9 million acres of offshore federal waters already under lease to industry," and "of those, the industry is not producing on more than three-quarters (75.7% or 8.26 million acres)."

Sounds like lack of demand from the industry for those leases.

Lack of demand, or lack of demand due to regulations? It's easy for the gov to use the "lack of demand" line without mentioning their egregious regulations that cause the lack of demand.

People keep spittlescreeching (thanks bogie) about regulations, but rarely does anyone credibly say exactly what these choking regulations are or give examples of anecdotal stories. Usually, a lot of blather that appeals to the intended audience that keeps the advertisers happy and the ratings up for that demographic.

Speaking of regulations and oil production on US government land.

https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/regulatory-changes-over-us-oil-gas-leases-not-hampering-output-barclays-2022-03-23/

Also remember that 6% of US oil production comes for US government land. That means that 94% comes from state and privately held land. Even with the royality increase from 12%-18% on new leases on Fed ground, that is still less than most oil royalties on state and private land.

I think oil companies don't want to get caught with their dick in the door when prices crash in the future like that happened after the oil run-up in the mid to late 2010's. I believe the oil companies are trying to maximize their profits now and buying back as much stock as they can.

How would "they" determine the price to set in every county in the country?

And are "they" planning to set the price the fuel station pays for their product?

Will "they" set the price for the crude delivered to the refinery?

What about the wages paid at the drill site?

I can see this spiraling out of control - fast.

Should I mention I have to make a road trip in a week?  The gas that should have cost about $400 will likely be more than $1000 when I'm done.  I'm sure glad I will have to fork out an extra $600 for no damn reason other than Brandon's puppeteers canceled the keystone pipeline.  Our gas costs have more than doubled because of politics alone, remember that.
