The old truck would get up to 18mpg.  The new (to me '08) has maxed out at 16.3 - usually closer to 15mpg.

And prices for regular 10% are ~$1 more per gal this year at $2.78.

What kind of truck?

The old one was a 1990 GMC 2500 long bed std cab, 2wd, 4spd auto, throttle body injection, 350ci, IIRC 3.73 gears & a camper shell.

The "new" one is a 2008 RAM 1/2 ton, 4 door, short bed, 4wd, (at least) 4spd auto, 350ci HEMI, no idea what the gear ratio is.

Really didn't want to get rid of the old truck, lots of good times with it and less than 190k miles.  But in the last year and a half I had to replace the fuel pump, window regulator, brakes & water pump.  The radio stopped working (complete dash remodel to replace - not your standard radio), the AC condenser needed replacing 'cause all the fins were bent, tires were getting close, tranny wasn't shifting properly.  Parked in the yard it's last day and the radiator sprung a leak.  And there was water in the oil.  Didn't/don't have the time or shop to rebuild (another) small block, thought about having a junk yard motor installed but SWMBO didn't want to go that route. So... I'm driving my first ever Dodge.

The RAM does have a bit going for it, the ride's smoother & quieter, there's a bit more get up & go and the 4 doors are nice.  Don't like the short bed & miss the camper shell though.  And it's not as easy to get in & out of since it sits higher.  That's going to get worse as I get older.  Haven't had to use the 4wd yet, but it's nice knowing it's there if/when I do.

Your Ram has a 5 speed, and Dodge actually recommends running 89 octane in their 5.7 Hemi. That switch might get you the bit of extra mileage you’re looking for. If nothing else, it’ll keep the engine from pulling too much timing and costing you horsepower. A friend of mine had that same truck new, and I remember it being pretty picky about the gas he put in.

I'll have to give the 89 octane a try.  Just about time for a fill up anyway.

It would be nice to pick up a couple hp.  The truck has a bit of a time towing an enclosed 12' trailer with just a riding mower in it.  I can watch the mileage drop when pulling the trailer; it's dropped from 15.8 to the mid 13's in about 15 miles at 55 - 60mph.

I haven't even looked at the price of the higher grade gas.

Gas is actually down here. Not a lot. $3.90 in town, $3.75 at the Costco.

I never know what to believe regarding things affecting gas prices anymore, but a local news story said gas didn't drop here as much as usual post-Labor Day due to Hurricane Ida. We get our fuel from a completely different region, so operationally (vs markets) I don't know how that would affect us.

The story further suggested that oil will hit $100/barrel this Winter.

We went up a few cents. $3.00. Over $70 to fill the truck sucks. Propane is up over 50% from last year and we are still on summer prices.

I just paid like $1.90 for propane for the house tank and was thinking it was cheaper than last year. I'll need to check my records. I think the last time I filled a 20# tank it was like $2.30.

We're still in the very tight band we've been in since spring.

The Citgo near my house has been stuck at $2.99, the Sunoco around the corner at $3.06 (although it's wavered between $3.04 and $3.06 several times), and the Shell across the street was at $3.14, but has dropped to $3.09.

I need to fill up in the next day or so, and I'll hit the Shell because I have gas rewards points that will will get me 60 cents a gallon off the pump price.

Prices have started to rise here in Northern Virginia.

The Citgo near my house, which had been at $2.999 for months, jumped up to $3.099 Saturday.

The other stations around my house have also started to creep up.

WTI is now over $81 a barrel and is gaining hard for the day. I don't expect this run up to back off any time soon, either, and I wouldn't be surprised to see us closing in on $100 a barrel oil by the end of the year.

On the plus side, US drillers are activating more wells, but I'm sure Uncle Joe will have something to say about that and will do everything he can to cripple US crude production even more than he already has.

We're on both sides of $3 a gallon in this area.  Some stations just under, some just over.

Last couple of weeks we've been bouncing between $2.75 - $2.90, hasn't broken the $3.00 point yet.

Thanks Joe.

That's where it was here for the past few weeks, but now everything is just over $3, even the E15 blend.

Murphy is still at $2.77, but the gas station down the street is now at $2.84.  I expect Murphy to go up before noon tomorrow, the 2 of them stay at the same price most of the time.

Okayfine - I looked at the gas gauge for the first bit of the Knob Creek trip... I was close to 20mpg going through Illinois. 3/4 ton 1995 Chevy, 350 V8, tow package, no tow, tires were 35 for the fronts, 38 for the rears. 87 Octane from Quik Trip.

55-62 mph, set with cruise control, according to traffic level.

Folks got there faster than I did. Except that I kept seeing several of 'em passing me.

Citgo jumped another 6 cents yesterday. Now at $3.159.

We're going to get close to $4 a gallon here in Northern Virginia, I'm afraid.

A year ago, iirc, gas was back and forth mostly between 1.90 and 2.25, with a little spike for a few days at times.  I filled up yesterday at 3.37.

$4.09 for super today in NJ. That was my first ever $60 fill up in the Challenger. My wife ran the new Jeep down below a quarter tank over the last couple of days, now I’ll have to go fill it in the morning before she leaves on a weekend girls’ trip. I’m sure that 20+ gallon fill up will have me whispering “let’s go Brandon” before I’m even out of their parking lot.
