Not that it won't, but I'm not sure I understand how.

Personally, I think a "gas tax holiday" makes more sense than depleting the strategic reserves. Depleting the reserves got us like two cents savings for a few weeks and the oil was gone. A gas tax holiday at least gives us a noticeable drop (especially if states do it too) without leaving us with our oil pants around our ankles. Plus at some point we have to replenish the reserves at much higher prices, so the federal budget takes a hit either way.

Here, this Forbes article outlines the feared intersection between a gas tax holiday and higher inflation.

Instead of a "gas tax holiday" how about abolishing the ethanol dilution mandate and removing the EPA's authority to meddle with gasoline formulations both seasonally and geographically?

Thanks, Mike.

Also, to be clear, I'm not in favor of the tax holiday, but rather was saying in my post that it's a better alternative than draining STRATEGIC reserves for a negligible result. I realize that I harp on this a lot, but they're called STRATEGIC for a reason, dammit.

But a tax holiday won't enrich some connected person who can act as middle man selling oil out of the strategic reserve.

I saw something this morning:  the IRS is implementing some sort of federal tax on hydrogen production from methane.  Most hydrogen is made from natural gas.  Not sure what effects this will have.  As far as fuel is concerned, hydrogen is used as part of the sulfur removal process among other uses throughout the chemical industry.

Here is an article I dug up.  May be other chemicals affected.  The hydrogen part affects my employer.

Superfund Chemical Excise Taxes: Once Again, Back to Run the Show

A lot of hydrogen is used to make fertilizer from methane.

It's really about translation of pricing.

Say you have someone making minimum wage of $7.85 in 2018 - At $2.63/gallon, and their pickup truck has a 25 gallon tank, that is about 8.4 hours.

Now, here in our current workers paradise, Let's get someone making $11.15/hour today. They're driving the truck they got from their big brother. It is $4.89/gallon here. Works out to about 11 hours for the tank of gas to enable them to get to work.

But hey, they should just go out and buy a $40,000 electric car.

Several depts on campus which are traditionally in-office work environments have transitioned to one or two days a week of work-from-home. It's their nod to helping employees save on commuting expense.

SWMBO and I have begun carpooling three days a week. The other two days we carpool in the morning and I take the truck after lunch. We usually run home for lunch but are seriously considering bringing meals. Not so much a huge savings per day, about four bucks in fuel, but every little bit helps. Annualized it works out to around $800 a year.

I have been trying to bring my lunch to work as well.  I like to go home for lunch if I can, but the fuel use does add up.

Now they are talking about using the DPA to reduce gas prices. I would love to hear their plan but they don't have one.

Oh I just figured it out. They will fly plane loads of fuel from Iran in exchange for pallets of cash.

I just made a trip to San Diego for a week. Once I crossed into CA from NV  diesel prices were running 6.79 to 6.99 at most places. I was near the 32nd St Naval station and they were selling diesel for 6.30 a gallon. I filled up on Sunday. I drove around a bit on Monday, went to Dana Point  and then Lake Elsinore on Tuesday. Wednesday I went from Lake Elsinore to Dana Point and then home to Pahrump. When I got home diesel was 5.55 a gallon. The pump shut off at 175 dollars and I was probably 5-6 gallons short of full. The 48 gallon tank saved me having to buy fuel in CA and probably 30 dollars or more.

$ 5.05 this morning at the Marysville Costco, 45 miles north of Seattle.  This is down 4 cents/gallon since my last fillup two weeks ago.

Filled my big Dodge up for $4.47, cost me $80 and change. Drove to the next town to do some business and it was $4.39.

Wow...

Price at my local Shell station, which had been sitting at $5.09 a gallon, fell to $4.95.

THANKS, BRANDON!

Speaking of Brandon, his cadre has been screeching about how he's not responsible for high gasoline prices, but how much you want to be they'll be screeching in short order about his insightful leadership resulting in falling gas prices?

I'm not seeing the downward spike you guys are seeing.

They've started pulling out the plastic sixes at most of the Phoenix Metro area gas stations.  Diesel and Premium are around $6.09 here.

I was asked by a grocery clerk out of the blue yesterday, where I thought gas prices were going to peak.  I told him that it would be somewhere between $8 and $10 a gallon, but only if government doesn't fling around a bunch of handouts or do other things to ramp inflation higher, and people actually change gasoline consumption behavior in a statistically significant way.  People that live within a few miles of work need to change driving behavior and consider bicycles or walking, or even motorcycles or scooters.  Soccer moms that drive kids to school every morning and pick them up every afternoon need to loosen the apron strings and have the kids ride bikes to school (that one applies to my household; our little one goes to a private elementary school that has no bus service, that is about 1/2 a mile from our house).

I used to be okay with refueling my Wrangler once every two weeks.  Now I've changed my standards to once every 4 weeks, and I need to take the motorcycle more often when running errands.  Refueling the bike used to be something I didn't even think about; now it costs over $20 to do.
