Costco
« on: October 27, 2018, 01:51:06 AM »

Several people suggested Costco. Brad suggested Sam's Club, which no longer exists in my area. We have Costco, and I know that my brother belongs to Costco. I belonged to Sam's Club and I still belong to BJ's. The above thread started me thinking that perhaps I should also join Costco as a replacement for Sam's Club.

BUT ... Costco's web site stipulates that firearms are not allowed in their stores. Those of you who carry regularly and who are members of Costco -- how do you reconcile this? Do you disarm before entering, do you ignore the rule, or did you not know that Costco is a gun-free zone?

I do both Costco and BJs. For some things one is better than the other, most specifically you can get I'm not feeding an army size packages of many things at BJs vs. Costco.

I don't recall seeing any signs, I don't particularly look for them either. I also only carry concealed. In PA signs don't mean much, there isn't any specific law about carrying somewhere with no guns sign. Trespassing laws can apply, but generally you have to be formally informed that you aren't supposed to be there. The only place I don't carry in PA is the once every 4 years I'm in a courthouse, that's where we renew our License to Carry in PA.

I like costco

I also have a policy of ignoring whatever a company wants. I only comply with the law. The only place I respect a company policy is at work and that’s because I like my job. Anywhere else I don’t give a damn. Like Texas in SC the only way for a company to prohibit firearms from legally being carried in is to post a sign that complies with specific requirements, and you don’t see many of those

Also remember a company policy against firearms may not mean they are anti gun it might be driven by insurance too.

In case people here haven't figured it out yet, I really like Costco. I like them so much that "concealed means concealed". :)

I have been a member of Costco since they opened in the Seattle area back in the 80's and membership was limited to government employees, military and members of certain credit unions.  I was a member based upon being a paramedic.  I have never seen a sign and routinely carry concealed into Costco.  If I boycotted every retailer with such a policy, I would probably be starving naked in a ditch.

Yup. For me, a business really has to be "in your face" about it for me to refrain from shopping there if it's a business that I otherwise really like.  I would have to spend like half my free time researching which businesses are pro or anti gun (or anti whatever I'm pro or vice versa as well). I do lots of stuff with businesses and people that I politically disagree with. If they are anti-gun, unless they have some sign at the front with a beheaded gun owner, I'll politely disagree with their stance and just do my business there.

Plus, often it doesn't matter what store policy is if State law says otherwise. I occasionally stay in the Best Western within the Boomtown Casino in Reno when driving back from Idaho. They have a nice little "no firearms" sign at one of the entry doors (but only one).  I routinely walk in packing concealed. In Nevada, "no firearms" signs have zero force of law. I could be asked to leave on general trespassing, and would have to, but not for legally carrying a firearm. Again a case of "concealed".

EDIT: I will say that I boycotted Hulu and cancelled my subscription after the Parkland shooting only because they folded like a cheap suit because of a couple of loudmouthed teenagers. Have an opinion for a reason. Don't be a lemming. Of course I was pretty "meh" on Hulu to begin with, so it wasn't much of a statement from me.

Unless I'm legally prohibited, or at work (because I like having a regular paycheck, and while there are times I don't really care for my job or employer, I'd really rather not try to find another job) concealed means concealed. If I'm ever called out for it, all the location can do is ask me to leave and trespass me if I refuse.

This was a few years ago.

https://pjmedia.com/blog/gunned-down-in-vegas-what-really-happened-to-erik-scott/

"Erik Scott was a West Point graduate, Army veteran, MBA graduate of Duke University, and a medical sales rep for Boston Scientific. He was gunned down by three Las Vegas police officers after they responded to a 911 call by Costco store employees reporting a man with a gun, possibly on narcotics, behaving erratically."

Not an easy decision as to whether to shop Costco around here.  FTR, I'm at that store regularly.

I'm not seeing on their website where they prohibit firearms.

I work right next to one of the warehouse stores, and I've never walked over to join. I keep saying I'm going to, but I don't get around to it.

Yep, I missed your post.

Well, know what I say, given that they've had several violent crimes in the parking lots at Costcos in the are over the last several years?

Screw them.
