ABC calls out Bernie on his taxes

Bernie promised we'd see his taxes already...nope.
Guess we can't have the proles knowing how much he actually makes...

Quote
In March, Democrats passed HR 1, a package of voting rights, good-governance, and election security proposals that would require presidential and vice-presidential candidates to release ten years of tax returns. The measure has stalled in the Senate.

Democratic legislators in several states, including New Jersey, New York and Washington, have weighed proposals to require presidential candidates to release their tax returns to earn a spot on the 2020 ballots in their states.

How does the hive mind feel about individual states establishing laws limiting who may or may not appear on the ballot for President in their states? I don't think that's legal. It's a national election -- the criteria for who may be President are established in the Constitution, and I don't think the individual states should be allowed to meddle with that.

Quote from:  US Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, Clause 2
Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

How the states apportion their electors in the Electoral College is explicitly left to the states.  They don't even have to have an election.  If the state legislature decided all the electors go to whomever wins a D20 roll for initiative, they can do that.  Given that they don't even HAVE to have an election, it is certainly within their rights to decide how they want to put names on the ballot.  In general I loathe to concentrate more power at the federal level.  As long as the candidate they choose meets the minimum requirements set out in the Constitution the states can do what they want.  If the folks in that state don't like it, they should take it up with their state legislators.

Nope. I've been told so many times when discussing the electoral college.

I see no reason to give more power to the state when it can reside with the individual.

Actually it's not a national election.  Each state has it's own requirements to get on the ballot.  It's a state by state election with a national result.

Tax returns from past years should have been filed in past years. Maybe they don't own a copy machine and she has to make new copies by hand?

Why single out Presidential candidates?  Why don't the Dems want everyone running for Congress to release their tax returns as well?  Surely THEY wouldn't have anything to hide.

The Speaker of the House is second in line for the Presidency. If it's important to see the President's tax returns, it certainly should be important to see the returns of the person who could become the President.

Bernie followed through.
https://berniesanders.com/tax-returns/

Jane Sanders has been paid an advance on writing a book? What''s the title, "How to Commit Fraud While Running a College"? If The Bern is running for President again, I would think the best possible strategy would be for his wife to stay as much out of sight and out of mind as possible.

And just like it was his wife (DEFINITELY not The Bern) who has been accused of federal bank fraud during her tenure as president of Burlington College. She left under a cloud but with a golden parachute, leaving the college burdened with a huge debt and no way to repay it. I'm sure Bernie knew nothing about any of that.

https://dailycaller.com/2015/03/26/exclusive-bernie-sanders-wife-may-have-defrauded-state-agency-bank/

In the end, she killed the college. It closed up shop.

And now she's being paid in advance to write a book?

I don't like the whole idea mainly because the people pushing it now would oppose it later if they thought it would hurt their favorite candidate.  However, I agree that if it is good for the President, it is good for every federal office holder.

How about go even further and require disclosure of all of their business transactions and dealings along with all the same information for their spouses.  Make sure that goes back 10 or 20 years.  I think that would turn up some interesting information on those long serving Congressmen.

I think it's MORE important for congresscritters than it is for the President. The President is limited to two 4-year terms. Congress continues to refuse to establish limits on congressional terms of office, so IMHO it's much more likely that we would find skullduggery in congresscritter's closets (or tax returns) than it is in a presidential candidate's closet or tax return.

I don't understand the call to see tax returns.  It's not like Trump helped write the Tax Code for all the 'Loopholes' I'm sure he's using.  Plus, we've known he's been a Billionaire Real Estate Developer for 40+ years, so there's not going to be any surprises as to how he got rich.  Nor is there a line for "Russian Contributions to my Presidential Campaign", on any form I'm aware of.  Plus I can guarantee that his are so complex as to require a Tax Attorney just scratch the surface, as I'm sure there are things in it that go back to Tax Court rulings to understand.

However, I would to see not only the tax returns, but the brokerage and other statements of long term congresscritters who are now multimillionaires on a congresscritter's salary.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Apparently Bernie is now a right-wing nationalist:

Huh?  Wait a minute.  Between them they have three houses?

Geographically, does this by any remote chance give them or the family members
the opportunity to register to vote in three places?

That is, if any of them were inclined to commit fraud.  Not accusing, just looking at the possibilities.

I can see voting on local issues for each residence which might affect you at that residence, but I can also see how this can be abused on other than local issues.

On my house in State X:  They want to build a highway through my property and will have to bulldoze my house.  Yes or No.

On my house in State Y:  They want to allow bars to stay open 24/7 but that violates my teetotaler principles.  Yes or No.

I should have a legitimate vote on those issues in both States.
