The Critical Drinker reviews "The Matrix Regurgitations"

How the blazing heck did this mess get green lighted???
Lots of spoilers. But at this point I don't care myself.

It's not as bad as all THAT.  It's not great though.  In terms of enjoyment I'd put it between #2 and #3, but I was pretty disappointed in #3.

It's a pretty forgettable action movie, and as the Drinker they at least manage to roll through this without destroying the characters from the original.  There's some nice visuals, and the "upgrades" to the hovercraft, and matrix in/out mechanics are kinda neat.  The storyline is just straightforward action without any pretext of the philosophical depths of the original movie.  Again referencing the Drinkers video, I didn't even see the "life is not a binary choice" theme as clearly as he did.  It came off like a passing comment.

slight spoiler:

There's a scene towards the beginning where Neo and his business partner are having a meeting.  In this world the first three Matrix movies were video games written by Neo 20 years past.  The partner says that they are going to do a sequel to those games, and then says something like: "Look, I know you said you were done with that story, and were never going back there, but our parent company, Warner Brothers, [he actually namedrops WB] has made it clear that they are going to do this sequel with or without us, so we might as well do it."  Then there's a montage of trying to come up with ideas for the Matrix 4. The Drinker thinks it's a lazy attempt to be meta, but I really got the feeling that it was Wachowski straight up telling the audience that there was no good plan, no good story, and nothing left to say.  What follows is a competent, paint by numbers action flick.

If you don't already have HBO Max, I wouldn't bother.

Heard about that.  "We're going to do it, with or without you."

Yeah, not hearing much good about it.

So, maybe I'll just keep playing the trailers, and imagine the good and interesting story that could have been told.

I agree.

I watched it on HBO Max.  It was okay.  I was on my ipad and cleaned a couple pistols while it was on so I guess I can say it did not keep my attention all that well.

It was an obvious attempt to cash in on the franchise. Keanu Reeves presented a performance as thrilling as a plain cardboard box.

I, for one, embrace our new alien overlords am intrigued by the "meta" aspect of the film, and will watch it when it's most financially advantageous for me.

Which is his standard.

Just Some Guy did a review.  It is full of spoilers, but I like his introduction in the first minute.

Well, at least it didn't subvert my expectations about it being absolute garbage.  If you must watch this one,  I recommend sailing the high seas.  Paying money to see this should be a crime.

Wish they had gone with the machine civil war idea where one side was allied with the humans instead.

That would have at least been something new instead of a rehash.

Absolutely. This is true of a lot of franchises, both movie and TV.

You don't have to like his acting, but It's too bad more actors aren't like Keanu Reeves:

Heard about that.  "We're going to do it, with or without you."

Yeah, not h, not hearing much good about it.

So, maybe I'll just keep playing the trailers, and imagine the good and interesting story that could have been told.

I actually did see someone saying some good things about it.

The YouToob "Living Well With Schizophrenia" channel, thought it was a good portrayal of psychosis.  This, from someone whose been there & done that.  (I started watching her last summer when my wife was having her "issues".)

Watched it tonight while SWMBO was having Girlz Night with her niece. Actually enjoyed it. Nicely meta with decent action, great visuals, and kick ass audio. A solid 2nd place in series rank.
