Favorite winter weather drinks
« on: December 16, 2020, 02:09:26 PM »
I mentioned in another thread that I went to the liquor store to get whiskey and they weren't open yet.

Specifically, I was going to get Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey whiskey, which I use to make hot toddys on days like today -- cold, blustery, snowy and generally just miserable as hell.

My recipe for said hot toddy (it also works with rum, scotch, Drambuie, fruit brandies, etc.)...

2 ounces of liquor
2 T butter, room temp
2 T brown sugar (or honey, if you're so inclined)
dash of cinnamon
freshly ground nutmeg
pinch ground cloves (optional, I don't use them)

Combine butter, brown sugar, and spices in a large mug and muddle well.

Add the liquor and fill the mug with boiling water.

Stir well to dissolve the butter and sugar, and sip.

They're great when you're cold and chilled and just want to sit in front of the fire (or pellet stove).

They're even better when you have a cold. The steam helps open you up, the honey is soothing, and the alcohol helps sooth a sore throat. Just don't combine a hot toddy with Tylenol.

Definitely a classic.

I've always been one to put either orange liqueur or Bailey's Irish Cream in my hot chocolate, but I don't drink much hot chocolate anymore.

Funny, I cut down on whiskey in the Winter. I switch to Apple Pie, which I made a good batch of last month, and will pour me some, heat it up, and drink it warm by the fire during reading time. Or else I also like drinking Grand Marnier in the Winter - same deal, usually while sitting by the fire and reading.

I need to figure out how to make a low sugar hot cocoa (no stevia or artificial sweeteners) that still tastes good for my winter blizzard proofer.

I like mead warmed up with cloves in it too.

I need to make up a batch of hot buttered rum batter too.

Emeril's is my favorite recipe

It even tastes good without rum, but life is too short for that.

Winter's about the only time that I drink whiskey.

I'm going to try the liquor store again after I leave the office this evening.

It's absolutely gross out. Snow has switched to a combination of sleet and rain, and it's that penetrating damp cold that cries out for a toddy.

We have Flavia hot drink machines here at the office, and one of the offerings is Dove hot chocolate.

One of those, a couple French Vanilla flavored creamers, and it's not a bad warm drink. Having one right now. But no spike in it, unfortunately.

Sounds like your only real option for that would be to use Splenda. That's made with sucralose, which is termed an artificial sweetener because it's manufactured, but it's made by altering sucrose, which is common sugar.

You could also try Monk Fruit sweetener.

Splenda also makes my GI tract turn inside out.

I think I am going to just try whole milk and natural cocoa powder (not Dutch pressed). Should be enough sugar in the schnapps to keep it sweet.

Ah. Yes, I forgot you have those issues. I can see that being a big problem.

What about honey?
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Hot peppermint Patty like Charby said,  or a classic Billy bob coffee,  Coffee with baileys, Kahlua, and frangelico.  Unsure of proportions, I've only ever had it as a fancy restaurant.

2 teetotalers in this house. Our preferred libations these days are hot lemon/herb tea or hot chocolate.

I make our hot chocolate using a quart of whole milk and 4 heaping teaspoons of Hershey's Cocoa mix. I mix the Coco in the milk using a small electric whip to thoroughly blend it. After I mix the milk and coco, I drop one or two mini-marshmallows in the pot. I use them to gauge when the milk is hot enough. I heat it in a saucepan, constantly stirring it over a medium heat. Once the marshmallows melt, I pour the mix over a handful of mini marshmallows in large mugs and serve. If we have any candy canes handy, I will place one in the mug as well.

For us, that makes the perfect mug of hot chocolate.

Honey isn't empty calories. The health benefits far outweigh the calorie input (when, like anything, used in moderation).

I'm dumping in 3 ounces of 100 proof sugary booze, not seeking any health benefits.

But booze is healthy, so you'd be doubling the health benefits.  =D

Lips that touch alcohol will not touch... HeroHog's?

I was going to swing by the liquor store after work last night but when I got out it was freaking monsooning on top of the snow and it was starting to change over to sleet. I said screw it, went home, changed into my warm sweats, and fired up the stove.

I regretted not going by the liquor store. I really wanted a toddy.

That sounds good.  I'm going to have to try that one.

I usually do some decaf coffee with Rum Chatta in the evenings but have recently been mixing it up with either the Rum Chatta, a really good Irish Cream called Five Farms (light years better than Baileys) or a new one I have yet to try, Disaronno Velvet. I used to drink Disaronno in coke when playing poker while the rest drank whiskey or beer and I liked it so I decided to give their cream liqueur a try.

I don't drink because of the meds I take, the wife doesn't drink because she discovered she was too good at it.

12 ounces of hot whole milk, 2 TSP of natural cocoa and 2 ounces of 100 proof. Needs more sweet. Well I'll experiment more this weekend.

Kahlua? (sp?)  Creme de Cacao?  Or use Southern Comfort for the 100 proof.
