Controlled opposition has utility as a gatekeeper when they have influence.

When they don't have any influence they still have utility.

Blow them up (often by revealing the hidden controlling leverage point) and the "brand" gets soiled, in this case moderate Republican.

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

I find it telling that so many of the Trump haters and their fellow travelers, the democrats show up to be sexual predators, pedophiles and just generally scuzzy people.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Inside the Lincoln Project's toxic workplace:

Interviews with nearly two dozen people with knowledge of the group’s workings reveal a culture of infighting, sexist language and disparate treatment.

Yep, the GOP is much worse than people who fly fully loaded airliners into office buildings and publicly stone women to death who show their face.

Former Lincoln Project senior adviser Kurt Bardella tells Joy Reid that al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, and the Taliban ‘got nothing’ on today’s GOP [video]

They can't admit in their own minds that they have attached themselves to evil people or that they themselves are bad.  They have to justify it by thinking the other side is just as bad or worse.  As long as everyone is bad (in their own mind), they justify the means.

I wonder if what we're seeing is some kind of moral cognitive dissonance problem.

Everyone wants to think they, and their cause, is righteous.  But, if you know you're not, but keep wanting to believe you are, what happens?
In thy presence is fulness of joy.
At thy right hand pleasures for evermore.

So, these are the folks who want to keep doing stuff the same way, while hoping for different results? Or just continuing to safely loot?

What I've been seeing from the NeverTrump side of the GOP since the election has basically been joy without a lot of thought, while at the same time they are wondering why Biden isn't turning into a huge fundraising opportunity.

If they hang in there long enough some leftist oligarch/corporation will toss them some cash before the next round of elections.
