Milk better than water for dehydration
« on: February 25, 2021, 07:16:55 PM »
Because reasons, I am taking an online first aid class, and I have learned that milk is now believed to be a better restorative for a dehydration victim than water is.

Milk - is there anything it can't do?

When my oldest was a high school athlete, their strength coach told them all to drink chocolate milk after workouts instead of Gatorade.  Same hydration benefits, sugar for recovery, and calcium and protein for bone and muscle benefits.

There are actually likely a lot of things that are better for dehydration than straight water.

With dehydration you need to replenish not only fluid, but often electrolytes, and there are lots of natural drinks that have electrolytes that water doesn't have.

One of the things we used to use for dehydration cramps when I was on the training staff in college was regular orange juice cut 50/50 with water. Our trainer felt it was better than gatorade for that purpose.

According to the class I was taking, sport drinks like Gatorade are better than milk, for dehydration.

Brawndo!

Does beer have electrolytes?

"Does beer have electrolytes?"

Generally no. Beer tends to deplete electrolytes, same with drinking straight water. You'll stay (generally) hydrated, but you'll lose sodium, potassium, etc., through increased urination.

Milk may well be better but the thought of drinking milk while working on a hot as *expletive deleted*ck day and sweating my ass off sounds a little unappetizing.

I find that it's OK as long as it's ice cold.  Once it starts approaching room temp - I'll pass & switch to Gatorade.

Problem I've got with Gatorade is choosing the correct one.  There are 31 flavors of Gatorade & seven product lines that each come in a variety of flavors.  I usually just grab a red one...
