Because we aren’t taxed enough already...

FFS, now the feds want to tax you on your mileage. I drive 20-25k miles a year mostly for my commute and pay a commiserate amount in federal and state fuel taxes plus my yearly vehicle tax but apparently that’s not enough for the *expletive deleted*ck nuggets that CREATED the infrastructure problems in the first place by diverting money for maintenance and improvement to slush funds.

I kinda figured with the proliferation of electric vehicles an alternative to fuel tax strategy would be needed eventually.

If I drive negative miles a year do I get a refund? Bueller?

I agree with Nick that with electric vehicle use growing, they need to chip in to infrastructure the way petro drivers have been doing. However, I also agree with Boomhauer that unless there is some REAL guarantee that the funds will ONLY go to actual transportation infrastructure (and not, for example, "the equity of roads"), it's a non-starter for me.

The current taxes seem to go to everything but roads. I also doubt that if a mileage tax was introduced, we would see gas taxes eliminated. With dems in charge of it, this is just a way to double taxes for most, or to punish petro drivers and push electric.

If the goal was for EV owners to pay a share wouldn't you just tack on an excise tax at the point of sale? Kinda like how sporting goods and firearms fund the great outdoors for the Patagonia crowd?

The problem would be that you have an EV owner who drives 10K/yr paying the same tax as someone who drives 100K/yr. Maybe that's not a problem if the tax were something reasonable, like a flat $100, but it would likely be a lot more than that.

Other than the tracking, which is a dealbreaker for me*, a mileage tax makes just as much sense as a per gallon tax to me. Again, given that the money was used for what it is supposed to be used for, and not for taxpayer purchased SJW roadside billboards on the interstates.

*Depending on how it's done. I'm not putting up with gov tracking tech installed in my vehicle. On the other hand, I report mileage on my truck to the IRS for the "farm vehicle" deduction.

The federal gas excise tax is 18.4 cents per gallon.  Every state also adds on its own taxes and the national average is 29.8 cents/gal.

So, 48 cents/gal of gas in taxes.  Let's math:

20 mpg = 2.4 cents/per mile in taxes. x 12,000 miles per year = $288 per year in taxes.
25 mpg = 1.9 cents/mile taxes X 12,000 miles/year = $228/yr
30 mpg = 1.6 c/m X 12,000 = $192/yr

I could see the state government collecting that tax during registration.

Another reason taxon tires is better than arbitrary registration formula: no guessing at how many miles a year, those tires last 40k or whatever so that's the taxed mileage.

What about burnouts?  Or track days?  Those events will quickly erode tire tread.

Some of us have two sets of tires, summer and winter.  Do I pay tax on both?

I shockingly got 80k on the factory Goodyear’s on my Ram. I was honestly impressed because I expected them to only last 40-50k
