Do you want a Tank Boat?

Just the thing for those swampy areas or to keep people away from your favorite pull in on the lake or river.

Indonesia went full GI Joe and has the answer to your prayers. The Tank Boat.

Two things:

The answer to that question is always: Yes.

And the Reds did this back in DubyaDubyaDos, so Indonesia gets no points for originality.

Huh.... I see a lot of mockups and CGI....  I didn't see a fully built and fully loaded tank/boat floating on the water......

I wonder how well it will actually float.

They did.

It was a regular tank turret on a hull. They weren't expecting an entire tank to swim.

Looks like a cross between a PT boat, an APC, and ... something.

Functionally equivalent of the Monitor I served on in Viet Nam.  A shallow water heavy hitting boat.

Nice. What were the calibers of the guns?

And is that an anti-RPG screen?

I am curious what threat they are addressing that needs a 105 mm cannon.  Either they have heavily armed smugglers or they want heavy intimidation.

I assume if the US wanted an armored PT boat, we would go for something like the new 50mm cannon plus missiles.

I would rather have an Israeli Saar 4.5. Just a little boat with weapons on every spot available.

I was wondering if they or someone else had a bunch of old tank turrets with 105mm cannons, but that doesn't look like like an old turret.

I agree that more weapons all over the boat would be better.  Depends on crew size maybe.

I had read about this on the FB 'Navy General Board' forum.  The current prototype being tested has only a 30 mm cannon.

And is that an anti-RPG screen?

The forward deck housed a 105mm tank mount with twin 50cal on top.  The Mark IV mounts housed 20mm cannons and 38 cal machine guns.  We had grenade launchers, M16's, and various other personal weapons.  The entire superstructure had bar armor (welded rebar) all the way around to pre-detonate B40 rockets (RPG's).  We had 2 eight cylinder Cummins diesels propelling the boat to a top speed of 4 knots when fully loaded.  We were the mobile tanks used to support waterborne operations in the Mekong Delta and it's tributary waterways.  Basically we were sitting ducks used to draw fire and expose enemy positions.

I remember seeing a documentary about WWII PT boats.  I don't remember the details, but it say the pre-war PT boats just has a few machine guns in addition to the torpedoes.  The boats used later in the war were covered in light cannon and machine guns and may not even have the torpedoes.  I am sure there is more to that.  I was thinking now days they would likely have the full auto 40 MM grenade launchers.

There's a movie in this.

I'm assuming crew of 12 on one of these. And that it was a hot, nasty environment to be in.

So we could call it The Dirtiest Dozen or even Caged Heat.

That might almost be more crowded than an M3 Grant tank before they pulled off the extra machine guns.
