Lite Linux
« on: August 12, 2021, 03:36:42 PM »
Digging around I found an old laptop that works. It's windows vista and slow as crap. It has a celeron m processor and low memory. I should be able to dig up 2 gig of memory but I haven't dug enough to see if I can put one of my faster processors in it.

Besides raspbian I've been away from Linux for a while. What is a good lite flavor?

Mint, XFCE edition.

Debian, if you pick one of the lighter weight desktop environments.

Still probably not going to be a real satisfactory user experience.

I'll see if i can find the motherboard number and see if it will take one of my fast processors. That would really help.

That's what I looked at first. It calls for 2 gig ram. When it cools off tomorrow I will see what I have.

Mint xfce is the go-to distro for old hardware, but I've had some issues with it on my old laptop (which has a dual-core AMD Athlon X2 with 2 GB RAM). Give it a try, and if it doesn't work then try Mint Mate instead, which I found worked better in my case despite theoretically not being quite as good for older hardware.

Debian Mint is good if you're hardware is not *too* old.  I don't know what exactly too old means.  You might try a 32-bit distro if you don't have much memory, although you'll need to use a different browser than Chrome because they've dropped support for 32-bit Linux.  (Chromium might still work; dunno)

As someone that still has an original version of Debian around here this should be fun. I'm going to truly to see how much I can upgrade this thing before I try mint.
