Smith & Wesson does Kel-Tec
« on: August 17, 2021, 08:37:53 AM »
Looks like S&W decided to pretty much copy the KSG.
Remains to be seen if the quality is there to make it worth $300 more.

New Firearms 2021: S&W M&P 12

I hear there are more new gun announcements heading toward the NRA annual meetings.  This one looks interesting.  S&W might put enough of them on the market that the price is reasonable.  Might also push the Keltec KSG price down.

Main thing I see is it is 1.5 lbs heavier than the KSG which hopefully means it is heavier built.  The cross bolt style switch between loading tubes ought to be easier to use.  The Keltec has a lever back in the receiver that is a bit awkward to get to.

Only other new one that comes to mind recently is CZ has a P10F pistol in 45 ACP.  Appears to be a bit beefier than the 9mm P10F and has a 13 round capacity.  So maybe a Glock 21 with a 1911 grip angle.  I would like to get my hands on one.

Is that a pump or a semi-auto? I'm not at a place where I can listen to descriptions.

My only concern is that there's nothing to hold the user's pump hand in place if it is, in fact, a pump.

Kel Tech has already had one lawsuit from a guy who pretty much amputated his hand by over pumping the action and having his hand go in front of the muzzle.

It's appears on the surface to be nearly an exact copy of the KT KSG.

And IIRC that guy was using an el-cheapo ver grip which only had one tiny rail hold point and it broke. Ones like the Magpul models have two beefy rail hold points.

Shouldn't this thread title have been "Smith & Wesson does Ruger"?

As in like Ruger doing an almost exact copy of the P3AT?

Pump action.

The Kel Tec has plenty of grip surface, IMO.  I never had any trouble.  I put one of the short BCM grips on mine to get a little extra power for cycling.  It is helpful to pull back with some authority as the last 1/2" is where the next round is picked up.  It is easy to short cycle and never pick up another round.

Looks like the S&W has a vertical grip option also.  It has the cross bolt action to switch between loading tubes which I think is an improvement over the KelTec.

I prefer to buy Kel-Tec just to support the only person in American firearms not making cookie cutter ARs and actually innovating. I carried a P3AT everywhere for several years. Great gun, Ruger ripped it off.

I'm so contrarian that I didn't respond to the thread.

Keltec should sue S&W for copying their "hideous plastic clam shells held together by screws" trade dress.

If they didn't do that, they would probably be $2000 and up like the fancy designs of FN and others.

First time I noticed the new S&W for sale.  Not quite as much as I thought it would be.  $1079

FN does Glock?  Hopefully they do it better.

https://fnamerica.com/502tactical/

Appears to be a full sized 22 LR pistol with a 15 round mag and optics ready.  I don't see mention of cost.

I didn't look past the pictures, but it appears to be similar to an FNX but in SAO and in .22. I don't have a suppressed .22, so it could interest me. The site said MSRP is $500.

That price might mean the retail price is reasonable.  That makes it more interesting as a 22.

And it already has a recall

Quote
Smith & Wesson has announced a recall of all of their new hot-selling and very sought after M&P12 shotguns manufactured before October 15th, 2021. It seems that S&W has had reports of two of the guns that suffered cracked barrels. Out of an abundance of caution, the company has asked customers and dealers to send their guns in for inspection and necessary repair.
