Which &$%^#!@ Version of Dune Should I Buy?
« on: August 24, 2021, 11:12:22 AM »
I'm one of the weirdos that likes the original Dune movie. I've never purchased it though, and want to. There are like a bajillion cuts of this movie and they run from $8.99 - $130.

I watched a really good extended version of it, well, it must have been 25 years ago now, and it was on one of the "cable with commercials" channels like TBS or something. Anyway, for some odd reason, a line a remember from the movie was Gurney Halleck saying, "Behold, as a wild ass in the desert, go I forth to my work".

This line does not exist in the theatrical version that is usually shown on cable nowadays, nor in the streaming version (I'm assuming theatrical) on Amazon. The problem is, looking at Amazon reviews, often for the same DVD, which is shown on Amazon as like five different offerings, there are "extended versions" that are put together by monkeys, and there are good extended versions. There is no way to tell which is which from the Amazon page.

Anyone have any ideas on a good extended version / director's cut?

Some thoughts have a certain sound.

One of my college buddies had some sort of bootleg cut on VHS; he was adamant about how it was better than the original.  Alas, it was lost to time.  As recently as last month he asked me if there was any chance it ended up in my possession.  I'm certain it wasn't; unfortunately, all of my VHS tapes ended up at Goodwill the last time I moved in 2015.  I did an inventory prior to that for anything irreplaceable.

I'm going to roll intelligence and guess it was called the Arrakis cut.

From my interzsearching, there is supposedly a completely uncut David Lynch original in a vault somewhere and everyone is waiting for that to be released someday. Four hours long.

The SciFi Channel Dune miniseries is actually pretty good- it stays relatively close to the book.  You can watch it on Youtube.

Despite the low budget and weird hats, it is light years better than the Lynch film.

Dune is like Blade Runner...

4,172 "definitive" releases, cut's, director's releases, etc.

It's a bit much.

I had one of the Blade Runner cuts on my Verizon DVR. Watched it every 6 months or so.

Until Verizon, for some reason, erased it from my DVR. Like tears in rain...

I never really looked for a copy of it.  I might have to start looking around.

I did get a copy of the book for my Kindle and started reading it recently.  Good book.

I do not recommend the Lynch film (sorry Ben!)

The miniseries is fairly close to the book.

Thanks! I bet that 1992 version is the one I saw many years ago. Who knows if it still exists anywhere.

Buy all of them!
I may do that.  The main thing for me is I don't want to mess with sequels to the books.  I am afraid they would not match my imagination.  Long ago I listened to books on tape for one or two of the prequel books.  They are okay to a point.  I find those memories coming up as I start into the books again.

Amazon has this 4K version.  Doesn't look like it is extended.

Amazon also nicely told me I bought a copy of a different version back in March.

That is the one I was reading the reviews on and reading different things from "good" to "hacked to bits in editing". I couldn't figure out if it was for all the options listed on this page, nor if all the options are the same edit, or different edits.

Not cheap, but I'm seriously considering this 4K version.

Also, to echo Millcreek, I actually never watched the mini-series and maybe I should.

I've owned Dune on VHS and DVD, but the version I currently have is on my Plex server.  I cannot say "what version" it is, I got it off usenet.  But, at 1:11:30 in my version, Gurney delivers that line.  The whole version is 3hr3min long and has about a 10 minute prologue consisting of drawn sketches used to illustrate the Butlerian Jihad and the various Great Houses that make up the political setting of the universe.
