Looks like around 5.4 million first-time gun purchases for 2021:

Lets hope the ammo producers can keep up!

If the ATF and FBI don't keep records of background checks, how do they know who is a first timer buyer?

NSSF surveyed retailers for their opinion on how many of their customers were first time gun buyers, and multiplied that by the number of NICS's run.

.gov not involved in this estimate.

So divide that 5.4 by 2 = 2.7 million to allow for <ahem> "optimism."

Still impressive, though.

That number could be high or it could be low. Really no way to be sure.

"All experience hath shewn that" when in doubt, assume the errors are in the direction to support the writer's position.

Hey, that's not just me talkin'.  I just used a PFA number. You can pick your own Plucked From the Air number.

^^I like to quote the study from MSU.  Everyone thinks this must be a university, like Minnesota State or something.  But I use it for 'make *expletive deleted*it up'.

Yeah, and I gotta laugh at the "peer reviewed" stuff.

"Here, Steve, waddaya think of this?" George asks, and hands Steve a submission.

Steve glances at the Introduction, flips though a couple of pages, suddenly encounters the statistics, mutters "Oh, yuch," glances at the conclusion, hands it back to George, says "Looks OK to me. Maybe it should have some woke stuff."

There.  Peer reviewed.

I'm not signing this one so nobody will know who posted it.
