Ben, here is your chance to save Idaho from the Republicans. Or at least some Republicans.  I will be interested to see how Ms. McGeachin does next year in the gubernatorial race.

Yeah, the Associated Progressives got themselves a pretty fictional story going there. The "republicans" they quote make California RINO politicians look far right.

"Republican" Bob Kustra, quoted in the article, writes opinions for the Idaho Statesman, and pretty much every piece is in favor of progressive policies.  His talking points in his articles could easily be confused for DNC press releases.

Also, the Idaho Freedom Foundation is a libertarian organization, which is why they attack Republicans in Idaho who promote higher taxes, regulations, or "reasonable" gun control.

Example of "republican" Bob Kustra:

Hmmm . . . the local rag (The Austin American Statesman) regularly prints "From the Left" and "From the Right" editorials side by side, and it's often difficult to tell one from the other. I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if it features Idaho RINOs or if they get their RINO contributors elsewhere.
Trump won in 2016. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

I don't know who owns your Statesman, but the Idaho Statesman is owned by McClatchey, so most articles are as left as anything out of Chicago, LA, or DC - the cities from which McClatchey tells their "local" papers what to print.

On the tangent, I wish there were still true local papers. They all seem to be owned by corps like McClatchey, and are filled with 80% Associated Progressives articles. It would be nice to get the local perspective from a paper on more than the annual pie eating contest. The "local" perspective you get on national stuff now is pretty much identical in both Podunk and Chicago.

Washington: Seattle vs. the rest of the state politically
Oregon: Portland vs. the rest of the state politically
Idaho: Boise vs. the rest of the state politically?

I wonder if Idaho will be going the same route as the other PNW states, in which one population cluster dominates the rest of the state politically.

This is the fear, and alluded to in your OP link. After three years here, Boise is just nuts. Whenever I'm there having lunch or something and someone asks me where I'm from, I always say, "Across the border over in Idaho."

I mean, other than like the North End and the students, Boise is not nearly as bad as places like Denver and not even close to Seattle or Portland. However the "villains" in the AP article are not far right supremacist wackos. They are traditional conservatives, whose values are what attracted people like me to Idaho. They are not a new, far right contingent. They are, I suppose you could say, the "old white men" that people want to die off.

If "Republicans" like Kustra get their way,  I guarantee what happened to Colorado will happen to Idaho within five years.

Yes. It is baked in. And it is nationwide, not just PNW. The big cities control the states.

This is all due to Chief Justice Earl Warren and his court. "Baker vs Carr", "Reynolds vs Simms" resulted in a fundemental change in the way state Senators were apportioned- from being by county, to being by population, the same way representatives have always been apportioned. So the cities got an iron grip.

We see this being attempted nationally from time to time, with various groups complaining about Wyoming and other low population states having the same number of senators as California or New York. Not fair, doncha know.

This is the reason rural America lost power.

I think if I was in Idaho there would be a better chance of me voting for a green party or writing in Vermin Supreme. The gov is obviously a squish but the grandstanding LtGov issuing exec orders when he is out of state? No, not how that whole chain of command works.

The Austin American-Statesman was owned by Gatehouse Media for the past several years, but when the parent company bought Gannett they kept the Gannett name, so the Statesman is now a Gannett property.

An "unbiased" group of "citizens" was appointed to deal with re-districting in Michigan.  They are considered unbiased because the alleged "non aligned" members supposedly equal or outnumber the Rs and Ds.  Their report was recently leaked and it looks like the proposed new districts would guarantee an R would never ever be able to be elected to anything again.ir

We're actually going through some redistricting here in Idaho because of the last census. I'm pretty sure this "dems should vote R" stuff is part of that. Right now both our state and congressional districts (especially the congressional boundaries) are drawn out in a way that protects the state from a big city takeover. Even just a small adjustment of the congressional districts around the Boise area could turn things bad in a Portland vs Oregon kind of way.
