Today's weird question
« on: October 15, 2021, 04:26:38 PM »
For today's weird question, please visit this webpage.

https://cmeco.com/  (Central Mine Equipment Company)

Scroll down to the bottom, where you can see the action shot of an auger cutting into the dirt. Off to the right, there's some kind of wrench I've never seen before. Like a pipe wrench, but with an extra handle, and it looks like it has some kind of swivel where the handle would normally be.

Anyone know what that is, and why it's made that way?

It looks like it is attached to the CME 55/300.  Doesn't have a handle in the conventional location, hence the "extra" handle on the back.  The wrench is connected to what looks like a hydraulic ram, so to me it looks like you position the wrench on the drillhead and use the ram to apply the force.

A "compound leverage" pipe wrench?  We don't see the whole thing in the picture, so I don't know.  And I think the hook on the back is just for hanging it on a rack

I couldn’t see what it is attached to so Either the hydraulic cylinder mentioned above or it’s a shackle for hanging from a crane. Some of the stuff I work on you have to move a pipe wrench with a crane or another machine to break loose or final tighten

I'm kinda curious how you found that particular bit of hardware.

It's a hydraulic rod holder and breakout wrench

You had a question so I devoted a few hours of research to the problem. You are welcome.
