Added an XD-M Elite 3.8 10MM pistol to arsenal
« on: November 28, 2021, 02:03:34 PM »
I’ve been looking for another 10MM pistol and wanted something compact different from the G29 and noticed Springfield came out with their compact version of the XD-M.  After reading a couple of posts on THR, I went to the local gun show and fondled one.  Guy who had it there wanted way more than most online stores @ $549 for non OSP and $749 for OSP model with Hex red dot.  Ended up going to Vance’s in Columbus but missed on the $549 non OSP model as the guy in front of me purchased the last one in stock.  They had the OSP model so I walked out with it.

Went to the indoor range today but they were so packed I decided to go shoot it tomorrow.  I have some 180 gr FMJ with Blue Dot and 180 gr XTP with 800X to shoot.  Those are my go to loads for the G 20 and Hi-Point Carbine so we’ll see how they do out of this.

I like the XD series as far as a plastic gun goes. As a lifelong 1911 person (presently 3 in 10mm) I found the XDm with the 5.25" barrel to be a very nice shooter. The grip didn't bother me very much as I used to carry a ParaOrd P14 for a long time. The XDm shoots where you point it and the grip safety was a big plus for me. I still get the heebie-jeebies carrying a gun with no safety and one in the chamber (S&W Shield). I guess it is just my being used to having a safety on my pistols for 50 or so years.

Enjoy the gun, it should be a nice shooter.

I had the XDM 5” 10MM and didn’t like it as much as my G20.  Also had a Rock Island 10MM but sold that as well.  Keep going back to my G20 and was really considering the G29 until this came along.

I really like the trigger on this Elite model.  Took off the mag well provision as it wasn’t comfortable and the flare was between my ring finger and pinky.

Will give it a go and see if I like it enough to keep or go grab a G29 and do a comparison.

Interesting, but where do you hold it?  Absent some sort of manual or instructions on each part of it, how is one expected to be able to use it?

A reasonable gun owner would expect a firearm to be clearly labeled for where your hand goes.  "Grasp Area" perhaps.  Or "Holdy-Part."   "Grabby-bit that goes down?"  Something along those lines.   ;)

Depends on the size of your hands.  For me, it was uncomfortable so I removed it

He is teasing you.  Springfield labeled the XD with "grip zone" on their last model.

All of these 10mm coming out these days and last few years. It makes me wish I wasn't in the process of liquidating all of my guns. I would be tempted to add to the pile.

Took it out to the range this afternoon and it shoots just fine.  Recoil with my 180 gr FMJ over Blue Dot and field loads with 180 gr XTP and a slightly over max charge of 800X we’re not bad at all.  Even ran 5 rounds of Underwood 220 gr hard cast through it.

I did have a slight issue with the red dot.  After walking it up as close to zero as I could (center target) at 15 yards it still seems to shoot a little low.  That’s with the vertical adjustment all the way to the stop and it still groups low.  I took off the red dot and will shoot irons next to see if it’s the dot or me…

I shot both the blue dot and 800X loads in the lower left, not realizing I had marked the lower right specifically for the 800X loads…smh

Other than that, I set the ambi slide lock with my strong hand thumb (I’m a lefty) a couple of times so I had to slightly alter my thumb position like I do for my Walther pistols with the ambi slide lock.

So far I’m impressed with the ergonomics, trigger and the gun cycled all of my different loads and the recoil was not as stout as I expected.

I am waiting to put my hands on one of those (and see what the retail price comes to).  I haven't even seen them available online yet.

Midway has the OSP with red dot available for $719 which is $30 more than what I paid locally.

FWIW, the 10MM pistol is damn near the same size as my XD45.  Even fits in my holsters for it.

Do you have a full grip on that pistol?

It came with a mag well provision but I removed it so I can get a full grip.

Here’s a comparison with XD-45 4” Service model, XDM Elite 3.8 10MM and Hellcat.

The 10MM actually fits in my XD45 holsters quite well.

Bah, 10mm Auto hit its zenith with the S&W 1006 and I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missoura.

I had a 1006 but that damn thing was heavy and a b*tch to carry in the woods.  She’d some weight and went with a G20 and now am gonna put that in the safe over this XDM after I run it thru the mill a few times on the range.

I carried mine the same way I carry my H&K USP .45 when I'm in the woods: A Maxpedition Versipack.
