French Onion Dip For Potato Chips
« on: February 03, 2022, 09:57:12 AM »
So the family likes French Onion Dip for potato chips and we really like the Kroger version of it.  But recently they changed it and we really don't like it anymore, so I started searching for a new one and then decided to make my own.  I found this recipe from Alton Brown and it is really good.  The only change I did was sub out the sour cream for whole milk Greek Yogurt on a 1:1 basis.  The flavor becomes more complex over time, so much the SWMBO likes it on day 1 and 3 but not day 2 or 4.

If you're even in Iowa, get a tub of Anderson Erickson French Onion dip. If you can aquire Sterzing's potato chips to dip, you have found midwest gold.

Prairie Farms French Onion dip is awesome too, but it is a distant 2nd place to AE.

I've made that one before. It is quite good.

Most of the time though my French Onion Dip is sour cream or greek yogurt and a pouch of onion soup mix.

I don't often say this about Alton Brown recipes, but that Iowa Girl recipe looks better than AB's.

I just made a batch of the Iowa Girls dip, and it is chilling in the refrigerator awaiting my wife coming back home from work.

I see in the comments on the Iowa Girls recipe that this is a lightened version, and apparently the original is made with mayo and sour cream.

^^^So the lightened version of the french onion dip as per the IowaGirls recipe is OK, and I suppose it is somewhat healthier.  I bet the mayo and sour cream original recipe would be much better, and I don't eat chips and dip as health food.  If anyone has any ideas on the amounts of mayo and sour cream as would be found in the original, please post.

This recipe from All Recipes has them at 50/50.

The OP recipe has 1 1/2c sour creme and 3/4c mayo, that sounds like a better mix to me.
