The video concluded with a message from the ABMC: “We remember those who never left the beach. We honor those who sacrificed by preserving their stories. We remember.”

My then lady friend and I went on an adult ed tour of Normandy and the invasion beaches in 1994, for the 50th anniversary. I stood on those beaches and thought about what it was like for those men to come ashore through the barbed wire and other impediments, facing machine gun fire from hidden bunkers. Then we visited several of the American cemeteries, and saw the endless rows of white crosses.

There was no way I could even begin to express what I was feeling. When we got home, she broke up with me because I didn't talk enough during the trip.

Oh, well.

The one that gets me is an infantryman retelling their impression of the sappers. When the sappers were hit and crawled as far as they could go they would self administer morphine, stab a lane marker in their leg and if able tell the advancing troops where to go. They made a path with their bodies.

I mean not impressive enough for the white house to say anything though.

Today, we mark 78 years since D-Day and honor those who answered duty’s call on the beaches of Normandy. We must never forget their service and sacrifice in defense of freedom, and we must strive every day to live up to the ideals they fought to defend. pic.twitter.com/2IRTQN4uEz

A tweet. Classy. But they were going to impeach Trump for not going to the D-day ceremony when his staff scrubbed the plans.

One of my must do trips before I pass.
