I carried a Smith 642 in a pocket holster for about a year.

I have carried a Glock 43 in a similar pocket holster for about two years.

The Glock looks damn near new. The 642, on the other hand, looks... used.

Meh. I have a m17 and several Glocks. There's not a huge difference between them.  I hope OSI trains with whatever Glock they get.

I've carried a Smith 042 Centennial in a pocket holster for over 20 years.

I don't care how it looks. I care how it works, and I know it will always work.

You see all sorts of complaints in the Innernet gun social media world about the 642's finish.  it's like a thin plastic layer that wears through easily.

I picked on up several years ago and on a 3 day hot weather motorcycle trip The finish pretty well failed around the grips and cylinder latch where it was up against my sweaty body. I was even wiping it down every evening. Still works fine but isn't particularly pretty anymore.

My unit has been rather aggressively ordering M18 pistols.  I've in-processed almost 100 in the last month.  OSI can do what it wants, the rest of Security Forces seems committed to the Sig.

When my dad was in the Air Force, he was on the pistol team. They took one of the .45's and put it in a vise and couldn't put seven shots on a target. They also carried the .30 Carbine for security duty. He did matches with his Rugar Standard that he got for paying for someone else's laundry one week.

Sig or Glock, carry what you can shoot well, and your armorer can repair.

Met a guy at the range a dozen or so years ago that told me he had been a member of the (a) USAF pistol team. He had a Colt 1911 chambered in .38 Special. The magazine follower had a slot cut for the rimmed case.

I have never met anyone from OSI. I assume they are similar to NCIS, or Never Could Investigate S___. I have met them and have a very negative opinion. So I will pass that on to OSI. They need to stop being special and use the issued gun that their parent service has. No idea how expensive they will make a cheap glock by the time procurement is done. They don't need a gun, the majority of their day is spent bullying service members.

After shooting competition and carrying primarily Glocks for twenty years or more I hope they stay in the OSI special office. Rank and file security forces have no business carrying them. Cops have plenty of oopsie holes to go around.

The 642 is soulless steel, right? What really can go wrong with the finish on soulless steel other than it getting a bit dull?

My 042 is some sort of anodized or other finish over the aluminum frame. It's held up well. Not great, but well.

1911 Gold Cup National Match. Colt brought them out to compete with the Smith & Wesson Model 52 in ISSF matches.

Good article on them that fills in some of the knowledge gaps I had on the gun.

I sold one back in the 1990s when I was working at the gunshop after NRA laid me off. I wanted that damned thing bad, but the owner knew what he had.

Soulless aluminum alloy.

My 642 looks like something Ichiro Nagata would have nightmares about. My Gen II glock not much better. But then again they have been my go to carry beaters for twenty years, I may need to update. The 642 did one unkind stint as my tool belt gun, quite nice in the center front nail pouch. Encountered sawdust, plaster, construction adhesive.

Soulless aluminum alloy.

Ah... that's right, the 42 means a lightweight alloy frame, while the 6 in front means a stainless cylinder.

OK.

Get a can of Krylon and give it a coat.

train the kids well so they keep their finger indexed properly and it is golden .

the only problem is now fanboys will be buying glocks - i have met a lot of nincompoops carrying berettas because uncle sam made the troops use them.

I have not been training last few yrs due to expense - which is why my edc is either a 642 or a glock - a manual safety is not for me

I wonder what the price point was for buying the Glock pistols?  I can't see the link if they mentioned it.

I was just thinking that I have a G19, a Sig P320, and a Beretta 92; none of them do I shoot particularly well.  Okay, but not the best.  I guess if that was all I was shooting, I would get better.

I bought a beretta 92 when I had to carry one. Wish I never sold it. Almost all my practice was either DA, decock ,DA.... or DA-SA decock and repeat. Did it at 25 yards so any flaws would show. Great shooting gun.

If I absolutely, positively have to hit a target at 25m with a pistol, I can only hope it's a Beretta 92FS.

The full size Walther PDP is pretty good at that.

So what holster did they get as standard for the pistol.  Doesn't it have to work well while sitting down?

I'm blanking on the brand name, but my unit has been ordering Kydex thigh holsters for the M18.  I'm like 99% sure they're Safariland.

Edit: This one looks right.
