Batmobile Caper
« on: July 30, 2022, 09:09:49 AM »
Long story short rich Californian orders a Batmobile from the only person authorized by DC Comics to build them. Builder is in Indiana.
Buyer misses a $20,000 payment and disappears for almost 9 months and then pops back up and makes the payment. Meanwhile the builder had moved the buyer's Batmobile to the bottom of the waiting list due to the missing payment and tells him he will now have to wait. Buyer reacts to the wait by contacting his friend the sheriff of Mateo County CA and having charges filed against the builder. The Mateo County Sheriff sends a Lt, Sgt, and 2 deputys to Indiana on a raid arrests the builder for an hour, had a warrant for his e-mail and contacts, and even had his bank account frozen.

Could be more to this.

Didn't watch the video, but wasn't the CA sheriff just a little bit out of his jurisdiction?
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

My first thought, too.

Their FB page is getting pretty well smoked.

You'd think a bunch of OUT-OF-STATE cops showing up this way would normally prompt a 911 call and a round of arrests by the local constabulary . . . I'm aware of some instances where cops tried enforcing something out of their own jurisdiction (other than "hot pursuit" of a fleeing suspect) which didn't go well for them at all.

A redux of the Batmobile raid thread lost to the Matrix glitch.

TL:DR version...
1. Rich Cali dude wants his own Batmobile. Orders one from Fiberglass Freaks in Indiana, the only shop licensed by DC to make official replicas.
2. Rich Cali dude misses a payment and goes radio silent for 8 months, resulting in his build being moved to the back of the line.
3. Rich Cali dude pops up suddenly and goes ballistic because his toy is delayed.
4. Rich Cali dude tries to get charges brought. Court tells him to pound sand.
5. Rich Cali dude calls up his buddy the sheriff who starts a criminal case against builder.
6. Cali Sheriff sends team Indiana to raid shop.
7. Cali Reporter gets wind of the raid and pops the story.

Okay, so that's the basics...

Because Rich Cali Dude is a real estate agent, it piqued my interest enough to go digging. Discovered his shingle is hung under the Compass corporate banner. I found his Compass splash page. Having been in the business and knowing that agents usually write their own splash page descriptions, the conceited, narcissistic self-aggrandization makes it almost painful to read. "Instilled with an innate enthusiasm that’s palpable upon meeting him...". Ugh

His business FB page is still up, at least for the moment.

His personal FB is still up, again at least for moment.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's FB page is getting smoked. Look for the post dated July 28. Commenters aren't holding back.

I like how the photo for his real estate page has him wearing sunglasses, and looking way off camera. Guess customers will have to recognize him from the trendy hair, stubble, and aviators.

I hope there are no children from this jurisdiction currently in another state with a non custodial parent. Would the sheriff send officers to retrieve these children or is it a function only provided to certain people?

How about how the first photo on the business FB page is of him looking all buff at the beach.
I would expect that on a personal page not a business page.

Wow.

In watching the DA interview, I get the feeling he's not happy. His curt reaction when asked if the case was a matter of the sheriff doing someone a favor tells me he's considering something well beyond just dropping the case against Racop.

Case dropped.

Looks like there's still some digging to do on the Cali end. According to the story, a retired judge has been hired to get to the bottom of things. Doubt it will come to anything, but at least they're doing something. Judging by the DA's demeanor, he isn't happy about any of it. I'd bet a good burger he's had a few unpleasant conversations with the Sheriff's dept about their conduct.

If Racop decides to pursue litigation, seems he'd have a good case for wrongful prosecution.

I still want to know how California cops can arrest a man and seize property in Indiana. Bounty hunters can cross state lines and apprehend bail jumpers in at least some circumstances, but aside from things like highway "hot pursuit" what authority do state, county, or local police have in other states?

Be nice to see some tile crawler take the case on a contingency basis.
Also be nice to see Indiana push legal sanctions against the people involved.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms.
