Bill banning most semi-autos in Michigan
« on: December 06, 2022, 09:36:27 AM »

Something to keep an eye on

Newly introduced bills in Lansing would ban future sales and ownership of semiautomatic rifles and the open carry of them in Michigan.

On the anniversary of the Oxford High School shooting last week, State Rep. Jeffrey Pepper of Dearborn introduced two bills to address gun violence.

One bill would ban the possession and sale of semiautomatic rifles in 2024 and the other would ban open carry of long firearms in public spaces.

These made up numbers are making him very angry!

I am taking the ACTION I promised to take to ensure that this violence never happens in our communities again. We are on the heels of yet another targeted shooting in Colorado committed by an extremist with an automatic weapon and 605 other mass shootings in 2022 alone that killed over 18,000 innocent people in the United States. Michigan has had 24 mass shootings this year, and Michiganders are rightly ANGRY. My office has been contacted all year by constituents asking WHEN and HOW we are going to take action.

The bill

I just did a quick scan but this jumped out at me.
Sec. 1. As used in this act, "assault weapon" means a1
semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable2
magazine and has 1 or more of the following characteristics:

(iv) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely2
encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the3
firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned, but4
excluding a slide that encloses the barrel.

As written any and all handguards are evil shrouds

Is this like so many leftard politicians that propose a bill to appeal to their donors but has zero chance of passing?  Or is this a legit threat to 2A rights?
