This study is based on 2019 data.  About twice as many people carried a loaded handgun daily in 2019 than in 2015.

Why would anyone carry an unloaded handgun?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

I carry a gun in one pocket.

And the bullet, singular, in the other.

Everything I learned about carrying a gun I learned from Don Knotts.

Ha ha - for whatever reason, youtube is inundating me with Andy Griffith Show clips.

Back in HS, a kid being questioned by the school cop (long story) called him - to his face - Barney Fife.  Cop was not amused.

This was in the early '70s, and the Andy Griffith show was still on TV back then in reruns.

I think "loaded handgun" is just to distinguish it from keeping a varmint control or hunting rifle in a vehicle. Or taking guns to a shooting range. I doubt they were trying to limit their survey to only those who carry their defensive handgun with a loaded chamber, and leave out the Israeli carry types.
